Be honest--how preppy is Middlebury?

I visited Middlebury last year and really liked it; however, looking over the booklet of the class of 2013 it seemed that lots of kids were from prep schools. I know not to judge entirely by images, but all the kids seemed very well put-together, made up, preppy white etc. I know Middlebury has a bit of this reputation as well. I love the school though--could anyone who attends/has attended Midd please give an honest portrayal of the kids there? I'm definitely applying but if it's really as entitled/preppy as some pictures would make it seem I'd like to know. I don't want to seem judgemental and I know that there is way more to people that socioeconomic status, but I do feel that it is sort of important for me to know since I am definitely NOT a private-school kid.

Middlebury definitely has a preppy vibe to it, but I don’t think that it is overbearing on the campus. Actually, my first impression was very similar to yours in that the first person I saw on the Middlebury campus was wearing pink slacks [it was a man] and I almost died becuase I thought that I stepped into a country club or something. But as I went on the campus tour, I saw that the preppiness is nothing overbearing although there is no doubt that it definitely exists.

And I do believe that there are a substantial amount of students who came from prep schools, but a lot came from public schools too! And the student body as a whole seemed very friendly, outgoing and interesting, definitely one of my favorite student bodies in comparison to some of the other colleges which I visited.

My boys(public school, not rich) found Middlebury’s vibe less preppy than other LACs nearby…Very friendly and not class-conscious appearing group of students…All LACs have their share of preppies

I was a public school graduate and when I arrived at Middlebury I was happy to discover that so many students from the TOP prep schools had also chosen Middlebury. Remember, that a large part of your college education is being exposed to different and unique experiences. However, of my five closest friends, two had attended public schools in the US, one had attended a public school in Canada, one had attended (what we refer to as) a private school in England, and one had attended Philips Andover. I think that’s a pretty good representation of what to expect. If I am correct, the majority of students at Middlebury attended US public schools. Sure Middlebury is preppy, but it’s an elite Northeastern LAC . . . of course many prep school graduates want to attend.
