Hi,

I am new here and wondering about the night escort service on campus. Have any of you current Bears used it? Berkeley seems like it might be dangerous at night. Do you recommend using the service?

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

642-walk. If you feel insecure about the dangers of nighttime, go for it. Esp. if you are carrying something like a laptop around at night in your overstuffed backpack.

Do people use bearwalk a lot?

A lot of people do use bearwalk. Definitely dont feel shy about using it. The bearwalkers are prompt and friendly.. Though it was kinda funny one time to see a little asian woman bearwalker escorting a big stocky guy home...

as long as you dont walk by yourself you have nothing to worry about (and that usually never happens anyways)

do you get paid for bear walking?

wow, never hearda this. how does this work? (do you call them or what? / how long is the wait / etc?)

so wait, is it UCB students who are the bearwalkers?

No, it should be a policeman.

No...BearWalkers are all students. And yes, you do get paid pretty decently for it.

I'm dumb about safety though. I've walked by myself at 12:30am from BART back to Unit 2 (i'm a girl)

o maybe we'll be meeting sweetdreams ;)

"No...BearWalkers are all students. And yes, you do get paid pretty decently for it."

Oh right! I saw one of their flyers on my floor sometime ago. But I did see a policeman escorting a girl back to her dorm awhile ago, maybe that wasn't bearwalk.

Yes. Students are paid for this job. It's not the police who do it, but the students are trained police employees. =D

It's a good service, in my opinion. The wait is usually not very long... ten to fifteen minutes is the usual wait. They try to get there as quickly as they can.

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea for a female to be walking back by herself on the south side of campus (esp. near People's Park). That is where most of the action happens. Definitely advised that they call Bear Walk.

Do you have to pay the BearWalker? If so, how much?

And, how do I become a BearWalker?

BearWalk is totally free.

Um...that's a good question. How does one become a bearwalker?

It's a great job. That's all I can say. =)

Do males use BearWalk? Or is it mostly females?

I guess this is a popular service since Cal is right next to Oakland.

Mostly females, but some males use it occasionally. Let's put it this way: it doesn't hurt to use it.
