For the following stores, which will let you go online and have items held for pickup at the local washu/st. louis store?

Bed, Bath & Beyond: From what I can tell, you can shop the local store and have the items held for pickup at the "local" WashU store....or you can shop online and have items shipped for a certain date. It doesn't seem like you can shop online and direct them to hold the items at the local WashU store.

Last year we bought a small refrigerator online to pick up at the Brentwood Best Buy, they confirmed the order, but when we went to pick up the item they didn’t have it and it was sold out. After asking to talk with the manager (that wasn’t there), the only person in charge told us the “online part” is a separate company and they are not obligated to hold items when they are in high demand. We didn’t give up because we already paid for the refrigerator more than a month before, they had to call every Best Buy in the St. Louis area to find what we wanted and it was not to far from there but we have to go there and buy it at the store and cancel the online purchase that fortunately they didn’t charge. We lost half day with this incident promising don’t trust in them again, so this year I will buy online to pick up there at Target and Bed, Bath & Beyond but never again at Best Buy.

Sorry Cressmom. Last year I took my son to the Brentwood Best Buy, walked right in and walked right out with a refrigerator for his dorm room. It was the last one that they had in stock. It was probably supposed to be held for you!
We also went to Target. It was a total zoo. If possible, I would recommend that people purchase what they need at home and bring it with them to campus.

I thought I'd join the conversation among parents of Wash U students! My son deferred admission for a year and will start as a freshman in August. He requested substance free housing, and I was wondering if anyone, especially Cressmom, had any insight into the room size and what will and won't fit! In terms of a lamp, floor lamp or desk lamp or clip on lamp? He's bringing a desktop computer so I don't know how much room he'll have on the desk for anything else! In terms of a fridge, where will that fit (did you get the smallest)? Any recommendations for a quiet one? And, do they really have to bring their own trash can??

Martharap,
Here is the link from the school's website to information regarding the size of the different dorm rooms. http://reslife.wustl.edu/housing_selection/options.html
I think it includes the actual floorplans. My son was in one of the newer dorms. It came with two beds and two desks. If I remember correctly it had an overhead light and we bought a desk lamp. As I recall we purchased the trash can. His fridge fit between the two beds and he placed his tv on top. We got a small fridge but he said that some of his friends had bigger ones. Hope this helps.

martharap, my son was in a subfree floor during his freshman year in a modern dorm (Danforth). He had enough space for most of his things including his golf bag, his saxophone, etc. I thought it was quite spacious especially when we went for Parent's Weekend and found out that his roommate has brought in a large sofa in their room.
The Target store at Brentwood was really low on a lot of needed supplies during move in week. The only things we bought from there was a trash can and a mirror which S hang on his closet door.
We bought his desk lamp from Sam's. He used the university's desk chair for one year but we got him a more comfortable one from Office Max his sophomore year.

Martharap, I can’t help you with those dorms, I’ve never been there; my S visited twice before going to college staying in modern dorms, and last year, he had a single in suite in an upperclassmen dorm (lucky him!) We bought for him a no so small fridge with can dispenser and it fit perfectly besides his bed (even under his bed at the beginning) and he put his printer on it. He had a desk lamp, but his desk was so crowded that he couldn’t make room for the lamp (it’s still boxed). He also bought garage type storage shelves to have his dishes, cleaning stuff, sandwich maker, and food (cereal, snacks, hot chocolate…).
I’ll be moving in two children this year, and we are going to buy most of what they need over there. If you start your shopping early the first day, you can easily get everything your child will need with no problems and no crowds, if not, wait to the third orientation day and Target and other stores are fine, you won’t have long lines.

i would not recommend a fridge from utrucking. many of them are damaged or otherwise low quality, meaning that they're generally unattractive and sometimes flat out gross

My s just graduated from Wash U--congrats to all of you who have those 4 great years ahead of you!

We went to our local Bed, Bath and Beyond, told them we wanted to pick everything up at the St. Louis (Brentwood; it's probably no more than a mile from campus) store. We went through the store with a scanner and picked out everything we thought we wanted. On the order form, we indicated what day we wanted to pick up and pay for our items in St. Louis.

When we got to the store, everything was very organized, considering how many people there were. At that time we chose a few more things from the Brentwood store, decided we didn't need some of the things we originally ordered, and just paid at that time for what what we actually bought.

As far as shipping things to school, there is very detailed info on the website about what address items should be shipped to, and the range of dates on which it is permissible for your items to arrive.

We shipped sheets, towels, blankets, bedspread, all of which I had already washed. That way, I knew that my son would at least START OUT the year with clean linens!
