Beer Bike is better than Christmas!!

It's been cancelled due to a death at Baker.

Oh how awful! What happened???

My daughter just called. She said that they are cancelling Beer Bike due to rain and the death of a senior who died of a drug overdose. She doesn't know him, but knows the brother. My heart goes out to the parents, family and friends of this student.

Does anyone have any details???

Yeah, I'm curious as well. Is the death related to Beer Bike? Will it resume next year?

There's a brief article in the Houston Chronicle http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4677706.html stating that the freshman student was found in their dorm unconscious. The family and friends are in my prayers.

sorry i=noob but what is 'beerbike' ?

ok i have heard of many awsome things in my life but this is just in a league of it's own...

That article about the death has even less information than what's been on this board... -_-;

really sad day. the university made the right decision

I run the Beer Bike website and as far as I know, students do not know the cause of death. I wouldn't rely on the information regarding a drug overdose unless the information comes from a university official.

I can't believe this happened, it's really sad and just awful. I will be keeping him and his family in my thoughts.

Yes, I apologize for spreading what is basically a rumor about the cause of death. It is definitely heresay. My condolences to the family and to the Rice family. :(

The OD is also the rumor on the Rice 2011 Facebook group, though according to whoever posted that, it was a freshman.

Houston Chronicle has clarification and correction of previous information:
[quote]
A 20-year-old Rice University junior found unconscious in his dorm room today around 7:20 a.m. was pronounced dead about an hour later.
Parker Robert Redman, 20, of Austin, was found unconscious about 7:20 a.m. He was taken via ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 8:30 a.m.
The student was a resident at Baker College, said B.J. Almond with Rice's media relations office.

Slightly more information: http://www.click2houston.com/news/11470606/detail.html

This is the student name my s. told me yesterday. So tragically sad. No point in posting any additional information until it can be confirmed. Our hearts go out to the Redman family, and the Rice community.

Yes, it was very sobering news for everyone on Rice's campus. Being such a small school, the whole university feels the loss.
