Before you ask for “chance”: Admissions procedures

A lot of seniors are getting fidgety about admissions now, so I’m hoping that making one central repository for admissions information will help out a bit. :) And it should be easier than having to “chance” everybody.

BASIC ADMISSIONS PROCESS

First off, to those of you applying to UCSD: this school uses an upfront points system, called the Comprehensive Review. You’re given points based on those criteria (look at the very bottom of that page), and if you make a certain cutoff, then you’re admitted – simple as that.

However, that page doesn’t really explain exactly how points are distributed, so some gracious soul has posted the review process online. Please pay really close attention to the GPA part, because your high school weighted GPA is not the same as UCSD’s weighted GPA (using this process, your UCSD GPA will usually be slightly lower than your normal weighted GPA).

The cutoff point changes every year; however, CC member Jake22 has posted the following stats:

2004 —> 7465
2005 —> 7483
2006 —> 7421

(Note that the cutoff point for out-of-state students tends to be at least 100 points higher.)

ADMISSIONS FOR NON-IMPACTED ENGINEERING MAJORS

Good news for engineers: you don’t have to worry if you can already pass the regular admissions process. As noted on this page, the Jacobs School of Engineering automatically places you into your major if it’s not impacted.

ADMISSIONS FOR IMPACTED ENGINEERING MAJORS

There are five impacted majors at UCSD:

• Bioengineering
• Bioengineering Biotechnology
• Computer Science
• Computer Engineering
• Computer Engineering

(Note that even though Bioengineering: Premed falls under the *Bioengineering umbrella, it is not impacted.*)

If your first-choice major is one of these, then your application (assuming you’ve already been accepted through the Comprehensive Review process) is forwarded to the relevant department (BENG, CSE, or ECE) for them to review, as explained here. I do not know each department’s review process, and I’ve yet to find any hints of it on the web.

If you make it into an impacted major, then congratulations – though you’ll probably crap your pants once you realize how insane your four-year-plan is. ;) If you don’t make it into an impacted major, then you’re placed into your second-choice major.

I’d also like to use this thread for people who’ve been accepted to UCSD to post their high school stats, so that the seniors have something to compare themselves with. And if you were admitted into an impacted major, then please note that in your post, because that would be enormously helpful, since nobody seems to know exactly what kind of process is used to review impacted majors.

Anyway, I was admitted into *Bioengineering: Biotechnology/i, and had the following stats:

Weighted GPA: 4.3 (Sorry, I can’t remember what my UCSD GPA was – it’s in my dorm somewhere)
SAT I: 2040 (Reading: 680, Math: 700, Writing: 660)
SAT II: Biology 720, Math II 700
ELC
National Merit Semifinalist (I’m a NM Scholar now, but I only knew I was a Semifinalist back then)
Scholar Athlete
All-American Scholar Program
Who's Who Among H.S. Students (x2)
Track and Field (9, 10, 11)
Cross Country (9, 10, 11, 12)
Free math tutoring: 72 hours total
Helping out teachers: 40 hours total
2 jobs (less than 20 hr/week though, which is the minimum to get points)

Note that, according to that one Geocities site, I probably didn’t get points for a lot of those things, including work, my extra-curricular activities, and those awards. So don’t base yourself quantitatively – look at those links I posted above to see exactly what the admissions officers are looking for.

ucsd 2010

check out the point system to gauge yourself

Huh? Aren't there 2400+800+800 points? Or do they not count writing?

Never mind. I should read before I ask stupid questions.

Can we make this a sticky?

yes. chowdy likes sticky things...probably to chow on.

Accepted into Bioengineering with Regent's Scholarship. Chose Berkeley instead.

Hot damn! You’re like a friend of mine, who got a perfect (or just shy of perfect) score on all of his SATs.

Good thing you went to Berkeley, so you didn’t screw up the curve for the rest of us down here. :D
