Few questions about nexts years admission cycle answers greatly appreciated

What are the points needed for admission to UCSD as an undeclared major based on the comprehensive points system they use? Ive heard anything from 7800-8000 any clarification would be nice.

Can anyone give me a list of some unpopular/easy majors to get admited into?

In reference to the first question would be safe to assume that 8000+ will grant you admission if you are an undeclared major? I actually want to be Biology major but i know its impacted so I want to go in undeclared.

Since I plan on changing to a Biology Major while im at UCSD; what college GPA is needed to get admited?

5 In reference to the community/volunteer services that UCSD looks at; what are the hours needed for the full 300 points? ive heard 200 hours and 300 Hours

Thank You

The cutoff changes every year. It really depends on how many students apply and the stats of those applicants. This year the cutoff was around 7800…I think. So the cutoff next year should be a little higher than that.

The impacted/competitive majors are all majors within the Division of Biological Sciences and some majors in Jacobs School of Engineering.

From what I know, majors are assigned after admission is granted…same thing with colleges. I heard that switching to bio later on is really hard and competitive-you have to fill out another application and everything. My tip: just try out for bio and put undeclared or something as your second choice, and if you don’t get it, well then you can try for exceptional admission later. :)

the hours are 200.

is there some chart or something that tells you how many points you get for certain measurable things like gpa and SAT?

theres one from 2004 I think (googled it, took a while) but it’s kinda unreliable because of the old 1600 system.

a link to one would be nice, if possible

Step I: Academic review Maximum Consideration
Uncapped Grade Point Average (GPA) 4,500
Scores of all required exams 3,200
Number of “a-g” courses beyond the minimum 500
*
Step II: Additional academic factors *
Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) 300
Educational environment 300
*
Step III: Socioeconomic factors *
Low family income 300
First generation college attendance 300
*
Step IV: Personal characteristics and achievement factors *
Demonstrated leadership 300
Special talents/ achievements/ awards 300
Community and volunteer service 300
Participation in academic development preparation programs 300
Special circumstances/ personal challenges 500
*
Step V: Computing a Comprehensive Review score *
Eligible applicants will be assigned a comprehensive review score by totaling the scores from each category listed in steps I through IV. Eligible applicants are then ranked based upon that assigned score. Applicants with the strongest combination of academic, personal characteristics and achievement factors will be admitted in sufficient numbers to meet campus enrollment goals.

I want you to understand that you DO NOT WANT TO DO THIS! Your chances of getting admitted to the university ARE THE SAME if you apply undeclared or for biology. If you want to be a biology major, apply for it. If you don’t get in as biology, they’ll put you as undeclared, which in that case you can try to switch into it later. There is absolutely no point in not applying for biology.

thanks everyone for your responses cleared up a bunch of questions

kingelite and gracie:i forgot that you also required to list your back up major. So then Ill put 1st BS Human Biology 2nd undeclared. i totally forgot

nicholep: here is a break down of my points
Step I: Academic review Maximum Consideration
Uncapped Grade Point Average (GPA) 4,500= 3550 (3.55 UC Gpa)
Scores of all required exams 3,200= 2592 (2040 SAT+1200 Subject.8)
Number of “a-g” courses beyond the minimum 500= 500 (ive taken 45 A-G)
*
Step II: Additional academic factors *
Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) 300= 0
Educational environment 300= 300, my school is in program improvement and is currently Tier 4-5
*
Step III: Socioeconomic factors *
Low family income 300= 0 (my parents make around 55k but I read thatto be considered poor you have to make less than 45k)
First generation college attendance 300= 0 (my mom has a BA from CSUN)
*
Step IV: Personal characteristics and achievement factors *
Demonstrated leadership 300= 300 (VP of one club and Captain of my sports team)
Special talents/ achievements/ awards 300= 300 (2 time league champion and most improved)
Community and volunteer service 300= 200 (ive done around 150 hours)
Participation in academic development preparation programs 300= 0 (no AVID) ***
Special circumstances/ personal challenges 500= 500 (family accident freshman year)

******- does MESA count in this catagory or just AVID? Ive also been in NHS and CSF do these count as academic prep? as and FYI ive been in all 3 clubc for 3 years now. and as mentioned above I am VP of NHS

Now my point total without counting MESA- 8242
If UCSD counts MESA as an academic prep program- 8542

To everyone: How reasonable does this point total sound?

UCSD will not give you points for CSF, because everyone applying is in CSF. That being said you can still put it on your application under clubs. Your 150 hrs of community service will only give you 150 points if you want the full 300 you need 200 hrs. As far as academic preperation goes (avid) did you ever take an SAT prep course over doesnyour school have compact for success? I don’t think MESA counts. Your essay sounds like it will be very good just remember be very specific in your details and spend more time on the epiphany than the story telling.

Nicholep: I took a huntington ACT Prep Course does that count? The course was around 48 hours

anyways do you think that Ill will get accepted? even with my community service getting me 150 instead of 200 points ill still have 8192 points

Your ACT course might count, and it wouldn’t hurt to put it on your application. I’m sure you will get in.

would seminars at stanford count. i did them from 9 to 5. so it was 8 hours both days of the weekend.

and i did it twice. so 16 hours in one year. should i put that on?

correction 32 hours in the year, 16 per weekend

Definately put that, but like I said you’ll get in.

i havent told you any of my stats, but thanks for the confidence

8192 points should get you in.

@McCormickt12
I didn’t read the name on the post. I thought you were FutureENTSurgeon, sorry:) and good luck with your admissions.

thanks, im confident im 7950-8250. Im getting excited that ill get in, but im trying not to get too excited or overconfident.

You’ll know for sure at the end of March when decisions come out.
