Beginner questions

Hey, I'm a second-year student in a community college, and I was recently admitted to Tulane as transfer. As a foreigner I don't know much about how to go forward with financial aid and such. They gave me Founders scholarship worth 14k annually, so that'll leave me with about 20k to find from somewhere. All ideas would be most appreciated, thanks. :)

To the top! :)

Bump... again! :)

I know next to nothing about financial aid for international students, but, strongly suggest calling Tulane's financial aid office and asking them for suggestions. Surely they have staff who have a lot of experience, and can direct you to the best possible resources that may be available for your situation.

Hopefully, you already know that international students are not eligible for federal financial aid. My guess is that the scholarship that Tulane already awarded to you is the most they are going to give you.

from the tulane website: "Tulane University offers limited financial assistance (up to a maximum of $15,000) to international students whom we determine to be financially needy. To determine whether you qualify for aid, submit the Foreign Student Financial Aid Application by March 1 so it can be considered during the period when maximum funds are available"

you are going to have to come up with the additional funding on your own -- can your parents help pay for some of it? Can you can work a ton of hours during the summer and then a part-time job during the year? Can you save on room and board costs by sharing a cheap apartment?

I am not sure what loans are available to international students -- but you want to borrow as little money as possible. How have you been paying for the community college?

I am not an international student, I'm a permanent resident in a U.S. community college.

And I've been paying for college out of my own pocket so far.

ok -- you originally posted saying "as a foreigner" and that led me to believe that you were an international student.

Did you submit a FAFSA? What was your EFC? you will be expected to pay the amount that Tulane calculates your EFC at (and it is based on assets and income -- your and your parents if you are under 24).

In addition to the EFC, you package will probably contain loans and work-study.

If you filed the required financial aid paperwork, you should receive a financial aid package which includes the merit award, any federal grants you qualify for and loans and work-study. have you recieved your FA package yet?
