More financial aid?

I’ve been admitted to an important liberal arts college with 40,000 dollars in financial aid; yet I still cannot afford my expected contribution of 8,000 dollars (I actually said I could pay 2,300 in the financial statement). I haven’t found any loan that is possible for us to pay, and the government doesn’t give scholarships to undergraduate students. Does anyone know other ways for international students to get aid? Some scholarship or a special loan? I only need a few more thousands…

Thanks for your help!

Kyo7, congrats! Have you tried talking to local banks in Argentina? If you have someone who is US citizen or permanent resident, try asking them to co-sign a loan from private lenders e.g. Citibank. Also talk to LAC alums in your home country as some alum club offers independent scholarship.

Have you talked to (e-mailed) that LAC about your financial situation yet?
A few schools review their award packages when you ask them to.

I have been very lucky that my EFC was reduced from 12,000 to 6,000 (I indicated 5,000 on my app) after a second read of my fin aid app.

I would also like to know that. Lafayette was asking to upgrade my EFC to 10k to admit me. I wrote a letter and they aren't reducing it further than 7500. Any other idea?

call up the admissions office and try to convince them that u WANT to attend lafayette. they are giving so much aid and i think it would not be a major issue to give some more thousand bucks for a really interested candidate. give it a try!

hope this helps :)

Thanks, I'll try that also :)

yeah no harm in giving it a try...Lafayette finally met my full need..after a review of my fin aid package.....I mean now I will just have to just meet my personal expenses...everything else will be met by the college....I got what I had asked for ....100% need met in my case..(only after appealing that is) :)

Hey, if it's Hamilton (I know you applied to them, I think I helped you with your essay), they reviewed my package and increased my aid by $17,000 per year. Just send the college an email explaining why you can't pay, clearly.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!! 17 K per year...that sounds extraordinary11111111

Yeah, well, I had circumstances... :).

having circumstances is one thing..while the college obliging to your circumstances is totally another side of the story!!!!!!!!!!..congrats then :)

Thank you. You're right, Colgate told me "nothing doing! no more finaid!"

so where are u going then?..

aren't u the one who got into places like UCLA, oberlin, hamilton bla bla...I thought I saw it somewhere...don't know for sure..are u the same person?

yeah, UCLA, Oberlin, Hamilton, Colgate and UC Irvine. Waitlisted at Williams (I took my name off). Um, my location says it all :).

It is Colby actually; Hamilton waitlisted me. I sent an email to Colby before, but only requesting assistance with my financial planning (and they didn't answer). I thought it would be cheeky and ungrateful to ask for more money...but I don't have more choices now; I have to write to them again. So let's hope a reaction like Hamilton's, not like Colgate's, because there is really no way for me to afford that amount: it’s twice my mother's annual income. I did see a loan for international students but I don’t have any American acquaintance to co-sign it…

Ah Colby is very generous. I am Waitlisted from there and the dean for int'ls emailed me and said that I shouldn't worry.

WHy don't you PM colbyadmission or the dean? They both are very nice and respond promptly.

I don't think colbyadmission could help you here; the only one who can re-read your fin aid app is the fin aid office so contact them.

Kyo7's got another 4 thousands of the financial aid:) He will be attending Colby for sure this fall:)
Congratulations to him!
and he did contact with the fin aid office through email and phone

Congratulations, Kyo7 :D
