Being a minority & first generation student helps?

If you're hispanic, and neither of your parents went to college - can that give you a little boost?

Big boost - mostly from being hispanic, but first gen. also helps too.

What kind of Hispanic you are is important. Being Mexican or Puerto Rican tends to count more than being another type of Hispanic. That's because the bulk of Hispanics in the U.S. are Mexican or Puerto Rican, but both types are vastly underrepresented in higher education.

Being first gen college also can be a boost.

I'd say one can get a small boost from both categories.

def. a big boost

That being said, if your parents are from El Salvador or another smaller and less-represented Latin American country in the US, you can still expect a big boost college admissions wise

El Salvador right here!
Idk if I specified what "type" of Hispanic I was on the application though so would they even know? It seems to have helped me out in hindsight nevertheless.

does it help if u recently immigrated to the US? (like three or four years ago...w/ english as ur 2nd language?)

quanta, at least on the CA, when you mark Hispanic, there is a space to indicate country as well.

Orange41, you have 128 posts and you still do not realize that being a URM and First Generation Student is not a hook? Either you are rubbing it in our faces, blindly posting on this site, or stupid. I am sorry if I sound mean or come off offensive, but this thread and you post count don't mix.

entomom, yeah, i went back to my common app to check and you're right, i did specify El Salvador.

Another salvadorian! Awesome :)

rmadden ...i know it is somewhat of a hook, but how much of a hook, I just wanted to know.

^ I am sorry. Looking back, I kinda came off rude. Anyways, it will help you a lot, especially if you have stats similiar to those of a stereotypical "asian" applicant.

Also, I AM NOW A SENIOR MEMBER!!!

^ Haha, I want to be one too!! It might help my college application (kidding, kidding)

^ Lol, that was my first thought. Ah, the corrupting powers of CC.

hahahaha that's great (to the last few posts).

And yes, that's a huge advantage! Consider yourself lucky.
