Which do you think is better, being a legacy at the school you're applying to or being a first generation student to go to college?

Depends the color of your skin.

Yeah. It sucks.

So it's only good if you're minority + first generation or white + legacy?

Or if you're a minority legacy. Then you're set.

So white + first generation isn't good?

Honestly, it depends where you apply.

If you speak another language fluently, that's definitely a plus.

Well, I'm minority + first generation. My parents are immigrants and Spanish is my first language. My dad's from Guatemala and my mom from El Salvador, though, I wasn't asking this question for me. I was just asking in general because I always hear how being a legacy helps and how being first generation helps, so I was wondering which would be considered better.

That will definitely help you. Compared to a legacy, I'm not sure, but that will help you.

Legacy status is better.

I was a FG applicant, and several admissions officers bluntly told me that it wasn't good for much.

Legacy = money. It's better.

i agree that legacy is better than first generation but urm is better than legacy. im a first generation urm too

Well, what if you're a legacy who has cheap parents? xD What if your parents didn't donate money to the school? Would your legacy status still help?

Legacy = more likely to enroll = higher yield = lower admit rate = greater selectivity = more prestige

It depends on the legacy. If your parent donate $1million, yes to legacy. But if they give a few hundreds or thousands per year. Nah.

Ah, so then it is better being a first generation, in your opinion? Unless you're rich and your parents donate a lot, but if you're rich, you're also able to cover the tuiton, which is another plus.

It depends on the college. Look at specific college's CDS and you'll see whether it gives first generation or lecacy more weight. It varies from college to college.

Well, I wasn't talking about for me or anything. I was just asking in general. Which one do you think schools seem to value more? Or which one do you yourself should be valued more?

Unfortunately, most private universities have the annual dilemma of funding for its various events. Thus, a legacy, which is usually highly regarded simply due to the fact that a family that is well-established with a university tends to donate more, will often take precedence over other factors such as first generation applicants.

I just thought of something. My parents didn't go to college, so I'm first generation to go to college, but is my little sister one too? Can she put that on her application too? She's only three years younger.

legacy gives much more of a benefit then first gen IF your parents are donors. First generation helps a lot too REGARDLESS of your skin color. Viva is bitter an has no idea what he's talking about.
