Does anyone know how to become a paid tutor over the summer? I'm certified to be a tutor at my own high school, but I don't know what to do about tutoring over the summer...and I'm nor sure where to look either. I could just surf the internet, but I can't tell how legitimate things are. Any advice?

I don’t know how you go about doing it. My cousin is tutoring at the public school and will be paid during summer school (I doubt it is much since it is public education).

Maybe the newspaper…

Craigslist has an education section (Your mother: be cautious).

Other than that I don’t know…

How do you get certified? I think it would be cool to be a tutor.

Try applying at local tutoring places?

I tutor 3 different kids at my school. I just got the job by reputation. I was a peer tutor for a while and several kids heard that I was pretty good at teaching and that I scored over a 1500/1600 so they asked me to tutor them in the SAT. I charge $30 an hour usually 2 hours a week per student.

You can’t tutor during the summer! There’s no school, silly!

^True, but there’s summer homework, and some kids might want to catch up or get a headstart on material they will be learning next year.

What?!?!?!?? That’s GOT to be an oxymoron. Unless it’s AP English, of course. And most kids in AP English don’t need help with English.

Are you talking about like little kids in preschool, playing games with them and teaching them to read? Not only would that look good on an application, but it’d be kind of fun.

A lot of schools give out summer homework. My school gives out summer math homework, foreign language homework, and english homework.

Well, I know that people won’t necessarily have summer hw - I was actually thinking of tutoring for the SATs, since I scored very well. But I can’t tutor by reputation, because I didn’t have the opportunity to tutor many times during the school year. Does anybody know of any good tutoring websites that I could visit? I would search myself, but I’m not sure what’s legitimate or not.

Try posting little adds around your town, I am planning on doing that, actually. There are a lot of parents of kids in elementary school that would most likely love the oppurtunity to help their child get ahead. I am going to put some adds up on the bulletin boards at the local king’s, safeway and the library. I hope to tutor in like math or something… that is so fun =).
