Also wonder what the point of this thread is, BTW. Blech. Seriously?

Wow. So much for a post-racial, post-hate spewing America. Excuse me while I scrub the sewage from my screen.

jkeil, something about this school that gets the juices flowing, ugh and not sure why it’s just the University of Michigan (it’s not like this for other state flagship universities - why this one). Blech.

I don’t know how they can expect Black enrollment to increase to 10%. It’s not like the university can force people to enroll just because of the color of their skin. That sounds pretty silly.

Also, if they wanted to go to a school of 10% Black enrollment why did they go to Michigan? Does the university send out false information about their demographics or something saying that Black enrollment was 10%? If so, I definitely think the university should stop lying about it’s demographics.

Also, why do they think White students want to take a class about Black people? That seems pretty silly also. It’s like they’ve never talked to a White person ever.

And what control does the university have over housing prices? Only thing they could really do is just cut admissions dramatically to decrease the demand for housing. I guess they could do that, but then they won’t have the money to provide emergency scholarships and stuff like that.

“Wow. So much for a post-racial, post-hate spewing America. Excuse me while I scrub the sewage from my screen.”
The only sewage comes from the BBUM jokers.

Jkeil, what sewage? Did someone offend you?

That was considered unconstitutional by SCOTUS a few years back (2006?), and hasn’t been in place since.

I agree with the majority on this thread. Although some of their demands are reasonable, others are completely asinine. Ushering physical threats discredits their message.

Love how people took this as an opportunity to attack Black people as a whole, just based on the actions of this group. My Country Tis of Thee!

Some people perhaps, mathisamazing but not most, just wondering what the point of this thread is, to get folks to start attacking each other over a lame article. yes, SCOTUS struck down the point system years ago. And I still say (as a mom), um, take your butts to class. Protest THAT.

“Love how people took this as an opportunity to attack Black people as a whole, just based on the actions of this group. My Country Tis of Thee!”

Where do you see these attacks on black people as a whole? Or are you just full of it and like to play victim in order to divert attention from the real matter?

Everything said here are either
- a response to the idiotic/thuggish action of this group.
- fact

On factor that does lower Black or AA attendance is the large % of OOS/International students (only 58% of undergrads are in-state). OOS/International students tend to be high SES (income). This is one reason that even with Affirmative Action, the percentage only got up to 7% or so.

[College Navigator - University of Michigan-Ann Arbor](<a href=“College Navigator - University of Michigan-Ann Arbor”>College Navigator - University of Michigan-Ann Arbor)

One effective way to drive up low SES attendance (and hence URM attendance), is better need based aid. It’s a lot easier to get support for improving need based aid, than it is putting in place AA policies.

@cmgrayson I think it’s just an attempt to start discussion. Strange to see a thread like this (article; discussion) in the U of M specific sub-forum as opposed to the cafe, however…

perhaps, cmgrayson, it is because UMich decided to fight this issue all the way to the Supreme Court. It is a routine target for every American who disagrees with the principles which the UMich thought it was defending. UMich has become a byword, shorthand, as it were, for certain ideas about America that other Americans disagree with.

It is most fortunate, however, that people feel comfortable expressing the vileness behind their opposition to the UMich’s principles. It is a lesson to the rest of us about how far America, or certain people in it, has to go to fulfill Dr. King’s dream.

Just let one black be perceived as threatening a community with violence, and watch the beast awake from its slumber.

I agree. I personally dislike BSU (they are too focused on medis coverage and trending on twitter) but it’s telling how you can’t have a conversation about Blacks without it going straight to attacks on their credibility (bringing up oudated, unconstitutional affirmative action plans), or attacking them personally. By the way cmgray, how did you figure these students are not academically focused just because they are protesting?

MLK was a Communist. I don’t think I want the country to fulfill his dream. I don’t understand why he’s the figurehead of the Civil Rights movement, he was a terrible person. Probably not important to you but I figure I should say that you lost all credibility you had to me by invoking his name.

^Agreed on the point re:king.
Same reason why history revisionists choose to conveniently forget the fact that Mandela was a communist, murderer and terrorist.

“It is most fortunate, however, that people feel comfortable expressing the vileness behind their opposition to the UMich’s principles.”
I will tell you what’s vile. What’s vile is an admissions policy giving preferential treatment/points to an applicant based on the color of his/her skin. What’s vile is a public institution wasting tax-payer/tuition money to fight against the will of the people of the state to abolish such racist policy.

Veterans make up only 5 thousandths of a percent of student enrollment. I guess its time contemplate my(our) list of demands.

Agree that UMich did the right thing and fought the good fight but how long do we cry the blues over this instead of ensuring that our children are prepared to apply when the time comes? It’s over. If it’s illegal to grant points to AA students at admissions then it’s also illegal to have a loan program for AA students? I’d rather see students tutoring AA students in the city of Detroit.

Diversity doesn’t matter. If you are good enough or smart enough to get in, you should get to go. They shouldn’t have to have diversity of they need to require less for them.
