"Activists on the steps of Hill Auditorium Monday said that University of Michigan officials have seven days to meet seven demands addressing lack of diversity and inclusion at U-M or physical actions will be taken on campus."

I feel that in it relentless pursuit of becoming the “public ivy” that it is, University of Michigan has lost it’s ability to serve the state of Michigan, including minorities and other well-qualified students of lower incomes.

My parents are immigrants and have only been here for about 26 years now with working class jobs.
No where close to wealthy, but definitely treading water just fine. I’ve barely paid any tuition so far due to financial aid and scholarships.

Learning how to budget your money goes a long way.

also the state of Michigan is 80% white, meanwhile UMich is like 63%. Don’t see what’s there to complain about

BBUM should also ask for a 50% discount from white owned food places too. That will help them eat too and make up for having slaves in the past.

This “physical action” thing is frustrating. I don’t exactly know what means, but it it could be taken as something other than the “non violence” philosophy that King used.

I’m a white Irish guy and admirer of MLK. When I was in Atlanta for a conference, I visited the MLK center. It was impressive and moving.

Likely these protesters had some valid points. I didn’t agree with every demand they made, but saying “physical action” negates the positives of what they could stand for… In my opinion.

True, jack63. It would be better for both parties if changes were made because they are things that should be done and are agreed upon, not because of physical threats.

Imagine in a parallel world, a group called 'Being White at UM" demand that white students % gets increased to 80% from the current 63% and if the school fail to meet their demand, they would resort to physical action.

Imagine the outrage… but of course, if you are black, all is forgiven.

I can’t help but think that this organization has no idea what it’s talking about. For example, how could they possibly think the university would be able to bring African American representation up to 10%. Even when it was legal in the state for public universities to practice affirmative action that number was only about 7%. The university fought all the way to the supreme court to hold onto that percentage, and when the university lost the fight in 2006 due to it’s ban at the constitutional level, that number dropped to around 4.5%. It’s not magic why this happened. The achievement gap is very real problem. To just pretend it doesn’t exist and instead act like the university has a racist agenda is a vast oversimplification of a much more complex problem.

Many of their other “demands” lack even the most basic level of rational thought. Special emergency scholarships made out only for those with a certain skin color, forcing unrelated academic units like engineering to adopt “ethnicity requirements”, and even special exemptions from normal funding rules so that their organization will receive extra money from the school. It gets more and more ridiculous.

It’s a perfect example of dumb activism. They’re not helping their cause one bit.

We demand an opportunity to be educated and to educate about America’s historical treatment and marginalization of colored groups through race and ethnicity requirements throughout all schools and colleges within the university.

Lol yeah right. I didnt even have to take English as an engineer and you want me to take a multicultural history class? Nope.

Also, I have been completely oblivious to this happening because I spend all day on North Campus

“Demands”! Oooh, they mean business. Anyone with any sense of human nature would understand that making demands and threats is the surest way to turn off people. My god; I feel badly for blacks at Umich that may suffer ridicule because of what this small group is doing.

Other blacks should make it known that they don’t represent all blacks at Michigan.

I wonder… what the point of posting this was. Battle lines are drawn pretty heavily on the issue already, the OP didn’t own up to an agenda but I do just wonder- why this story? why this issue? why now? What response was hoped for?

“The university fought all the way to the supreme court to hold onto that percentage, and when the university lost the fight in 2006 due to it’s ban at the constitutional level, that number dropped to around 4.5%. And I wonder why.

In the admission process, they use a point system there. And black people get extra points just for being black. I am not black, but I grew up in poverty. I went to a state university and am still horribly in debt from all the loans. That university still gives scholarships just based on race alone. This is just plain wrong and racist. People of all races are valid and worthy of equal help. Financial help should be based on income, or merit alone, not race.

I said ‘go to class’ and I’m a black woman from Michigan. We can either protest this or you can do what I did yesterday - I took my D to an ACT prep class. Yes, we talk about this at home too. You either get in if you can (IF you care to apply) or you go somewhere else. It’s also cold as, well, it’s cold as Michigan in the winter time so not sure what physical action they will take but it SHOULD be go inside and study something. It’s 12 degrees outside.
