Hello, I’m gay and from the south. In the south frat culture is extremely homophobic. So I was wondering if it would be safe to join a frat and be openly gay at tufts. I know the student pop is very liberal and I was wondering if that applies to the frats as well? Thanks!
The Boston area is quite liberal all on it’s own. That’s going to be a huge difference in quality of life. I could imagine there is a risk of some jerk being in a frat. But with the temperament of the average Tufts student - in my experience intellectual and open minded - that risk won’t be much higher than that of anyone having to interact with a jerk, independent of sexual orientation.
Being openly gay at Tufts should be quite safe.
I’m an openly gay student at Tufts and am in a frat!! I feel super safe at parties and feel like I can be myself 
The frats for the most part couldn’t care less about your sexuality (ATO, ZBT AND DTD probably being the most welcoming). I’m not too sure about others frats, but because Tufts has such a huge and active LGBT scene, homophobia would be shut down instantly if people saw it at a frat party (or anywhere, for that matter).
Rush and you will find which frats are a fit. In the northeast most people don’t really care.
While Boston seems pretty liberal, frat culture in general is pretty homophobic…
