Being recruited, but... (Chance Me!)

Okay, so I’m being recruited to play men’s volleyball at Harvard, Princeton and MIT. However, since men’s volleyball isn’t a popular sport by any means, they don’t really have much pull with the admissions office. So it’s pretty much up to my profile to get in. How do you think I stack up…

White/Male

Will not be applying for financial aid

ACT: 32

GPA: 3.8+ UW

I go to a top public school with a senior class of about 800 kids. It’s extremely competitive and each year we send at least 10 people to Stanford and admit at least 5 to HPY and to all the other Ivy Leagues + MIT, Duke, Vanderbilt, etc.

I probably have one of the most rigorous schedules at the school, 5 APs (out of 6 classes) junior and senior year. Got straight A’s both semesters junior year (4.8 GPA W). Looking to do the same senior year. Will graduate with 12 total AP Classes.

*Photography is big for me, got a 5 on AP Art Portfolio, won contests, sold artwork, etc.
*Will be submitting an Art Supplement.
*Also did my own unique community service where I took photos of products/services local companies offered for free. Work used in online and promotional advertisements.

Awards[ish]:
*CSF

*NSHSS
*AP Scholar

Teacher Recommendations: Great
Essays: Great
Interviews: Should be great…I’m good with people

Other information: Father didn’t go to college. Sisters attended and graduated from Georgetown and Yale. Parents now both retired.

Once again, schools I’m being recruited at are: Harvard, Princeton & MIT (EA).
I’m also applying to: U Chicago (EA), Dartmouth, Yale, NYU, Georgetown.

Any other comments will be considered too! Thank you so much for your time!

Chance me? I’ll chance you back.

Harvard: reach (I don’t know how much of a pull vball will have on the three of them)
Princeton: reach
MIT (EA): reach
U Chicago (EA): match
Dartmouth: low reach
Yale: reach
NYU: match
Georgetown: high match

If you can, try to retake you SATII’s because they could be a higher. I’d say your EC’s are good.

Chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/774543-chance-me-if-you-want-will-much-appreciated.html

A coach could pull you into any of these schools. Without that, ivies and MIT are enormous reaches.

freethefork - Thanks! I was thinking about retaking the SATII’s but I’ve heard from multiple people (including admission officers) that they really arent a high factor in deciding the admission process. Hopefully I do in the mid-high 700s on bio, though.

hmom5 - Thanks–I’m hoping that they have some pull just to give me that extra nudge. :D

You need pull, not a nudge. Most coaches will be very honest about what they can do.

Ha well I didn’t think I was THAT far off base from some of those schools, but thats just my opinion. Many coaches have told me that they flag my file as an athlete and write a letter of rec/why they want me and the admissions office takes that highly into consideration. Although, I know it works different with some schools. The top academic schools are usually more secretive about the whole process, as the admissions office doesnt give them a lot of information.

I don’t think you have a chance at MIT, even with the support of the recruiters. You just don’t have the math/science cred.

On the other hand, I think you have a very good chance at Harvard or Princeton, as long as you keep in touch with the recruiters. They have a lot more sway than they’ll admit, and since you already would have a low but authentic chance of acceptance, they should push you over the edge. Just make sure your essays are good.

Empires:
Thanks! Ha yeah I’m not really math-oriented…bahaha but I thought because I’m different from the majority of students at MIT I might supply diversity (ehh…prob not…haha). And I agree for Harvard and Princeton…I’ve been keeping in constant contact with the coaches and I think I have pretty strong essays…so hopefully!
Thanks again

The EC and Grades are really good and your choices are looking good. About MIT,as the people have said before, you aren’t really math or science oriented, so you lose points there, but on the other hand, if you choose a non-math/science major, I don’t see why they won’t accept you

There are people with your kind of stats that go to Harvard every year at my school, but they never have the extra sports EC and the fact that a parent didn’t go to college

Another thing about your major, you really don’t want to apply as undecided, becuase in reality, “undecided” will not help you into college (unless you do math/science at MIT, for example). Plus, when you really do select your major after a year of school, transfering majors will be a problem and at times, people don’t get the major they want.

Thanks for the feedback Jiapet. I was thinking of going into Business at MIT, so I don’t know if that would give me an edge?
I think my resume tends to give off a more “artsy” feel since I’m centered a lot around art and design, so should I just say I’m applying as an visual arts major and then change it later on?

Not true. Ivy coaches know exactly how many they can get in and what AI a player needs to be successful.

hmom5 - My sister was recruited to an ivy for volleyball and we’ve become extremely good friends with the head coach…the admissions office truly doesn’t give them a whole lot of information. They’re usually given a general amount on likely letters, but it is by no means a definite number. That’s all…sometimes players get rejected they think would be a shoe in and sometimes people they think aren’t a match get accepted.

Anyone else? :)

Thanks for the insight. Have I mentioned that I was at one time an ivy admissions officer?

hmom5 - ha, no. But I’m just telling you what I’ve heard from someone who works their currently. They could be completely lying to us, but I doubt it. Thanks for your opinion, though.

I think just in-case you should raise your ACT a bit if possible and take your SAT IIs again. Other than that, if your being recruited your coaches should be able to get you in.

Your ACT is pretty good, the SAT IIs are also good but not spectacular. But then again SAT IIs aren’t as important as some people think IMHO…

Harvard: reach - harvard is a reach for anyone even with perfect stats :stuck_out_tongue:
Princeton: reach
MIT (EA): reach
U Chicago (EA): match
Dartmouth: match/reach
Yale: reach
NYU: in
Georgetown: match

Anyone else? I’ll chance you back :)

i’d say the schools that recruited you are matches, rest are reaches
Harvard-Match
MIA-Match
Princeton-Match
UChicago- Reach
Yale-Reach
NYU-Match obviously
Dartmouth-Reach
Georgetown-match/reach

Thanks for the input cgb and shuai  appreciated!
