i doubt many colleges care about the difference between #1 and #2 or anywhere in the top 5%

"Wowwww this was repetative. And redundat."

The irony of that statement just about killed me. Lol.

^oh lmaoooooooooo i totally get it

Do it for the high rank - not necessarily for the title. The rank will help your chances of getting into a good school.

Yes, the rank is important, but being THE number 1 is not. There are a LOT of valedictorians who only got there by "playing the class-rank game" and are NOT strong applicants. The important thing is to get a strong class rank and then focus on other areas.

Yes. It's a great idea to be the highest rank possible and, unintentionally, weaken the other parts of your total package that you neglect because you strive to be defined by a number.

:)

Why do you want to be Valedictorian? Just for the title? If you mean that being Valedictorian gives you a foot in the door to great schools well in a sense it can, but not the title itself. You need much, much more. You need to get your academic index # way up there and that takes alot of work, study and planning and that still does not guarantee your entrance into your dream schools. Please do not do it for the title.

plus, only go for the valedictorian spot if you really want to give that valedictorian speech. If you don't, then just aim for salutorian/top 5 :D

Mmm. At our school both val and sal give speeches. The shy ones tend to stop grade-climbing once they get into the top 5 for that reason.

Valedictorian isn't everything. I'm first in my class but I don't really care whether or not I get the title. I'm the only one in the school taking AP classes and we go on 4.0 scale! Take them to be prepared and really have a challenge. Besides, do you think you deserve valedictorian from all the other hard workers who aren't taking AP classes?

haha..me too

If I could go back in time, I'd try. You can get awesome scholarships and opportunitites. The only bad thing is all the things you give up in order to get it. Do the benefits really outweigh the downsides?

Haha, I don't think being val is that important... At my school, everyone's only 0.02 apart or something, so if you're above a certain threshold, it's a matter of luck and course selection.

And I say this partially out of bitterness, because my grades are plummeting and I can soon kiss my number one rank goodbye. :D

I can personally say that not being valedictorian hasn't really hurt me. Colleges realize how close these things can be and how you don't necessarily spend all your time on school work. Having a high rank is always good, but being number one is just impressive to the people of your high school - it's a good ego trip if anything. But the adcoms, once you get to within that range, will probably be looking for other things, so concentrate on those too.

Yeah, I'm only like 3rd or 4th in my class, but I'm taking 5 AP's next year for fun... not because of valedictorian. If I get it, cheers to me. If I don't, well, I know I will have learned a lot and had been productive.

The Val for our junior class is a prime example of the val quest.
She studies all the time and all other ECs, etc, go to waste just because she has this obsession with being #1 and freaks out if her grades drop.
I would be surprised if she gets into UT.
Ridiculous. No people skills, etc. No hope for anything more than a dreary state school

/sarcasm. You know you <3 me.

well, if u do horribly in the 5 ap's it will hurt ur gpa and it will be very very sad.
