Does anyone know anything about the MT program at Belmont? It is becoming very competitive I know and had their first NY showcase this year, but don't know anyone who knows about the program first hand.

I know a music director and several grads of Belmont - it seems to me that a motivated student can get the goods at Belmont. It is a still developing program that is moving in the right direction.

Thanks so much for your thoughts. I feel you have confirmed what I’ve gathered about the program at Belmont. The main problem I see is the fact that they do not participate in Unifieds and that means one more trip to audition. A Sr. can only make so many trips with the cost/ missing school/ theatre commitments he has to juggle! Wish they all did some sort of a Unified program! Seems like there need to be more regional audition opportunities since the programs are so competitive. We’ve been advised that he should audition to 8-12 programs to raise his chances of acceptances.

I agree with mom2mt, wishing that more schools did some sort of Unified program. As she states, the time commitment to audition at multiple schools can be daunting, even if money is not an issue.

Even better, I wish more schools had a preliminary screening process that included DVD auditions and criticial review of college applications. It seems that astute reviewers could narrow the audition lists considerably by using quality DVD submissions.

Can anyone tell me which schools (if any) use a pre-screening DVD audition?

I think that Indiana University BFA in Musical Theatre does a pre-screening. It would be worth checking that out on the Indiana University – Bloomington thread.

I think in order to participate in Unifieds a school must offer a BFA degree… I could be wrong, but I think the degree at Belmont is a BM? Someone currently in the program would be able to confirm.

I’m not in the program at Belmont but it is a BM program, not a BFA.

Two answers to above:

1) OU also does prescreening, either by DVD or by the student being seen at unified auditions or a state thespian competition.

2) Last summer my son worked with 2 very talented Belmont MT students. Based on those students, I think they have a good program!

I stumbled across some impressive YouTube performances from Belmont MT recently. Several of the girls were among the best I’ve seen/heard from college programs on YouTube. I realize that YouTube is not a good place to research college MT programs, but it is clear that some very talented kids are matriculating at Belmont in MT.
