Beloit the town

My D is a senior. The town is much better now than it was when she first arrived. The Beloit Inn next to the river and along the riverwalk is very nice. I recommend it if you are going to visit. She often goes to the farmer's market (in town) on Saturday mornings, and although she has a car, it is easier for her to walk.

Beloit has a negative reputation in Wisconsin, and people who don't know how great the college is tend to be amazed, "your D goes to Beloit?" I've been quite happily pleased with the town, especially given the poor reputation. The river area looks pleasant, there are some businesses of interest in the downtown. I had occasion to speak with someone who had worked with the Beloit police at one point. He had no concerns about the campus or that immediate area. The college is close to downtown, which makes using the city library easy, and other businesses, though few in number, are walkable. My D lives there without a car, and is fine without one. I believe there are school sponsored bus runs to Walmart and Target.

In answer to the question about the bus: The Van Galder bus which goes to the Chicago airports, Chicago and up to Madison, stops right off of the highway at a McDonald's. Beloit (the college) runs a shuttle to and from the stop at break times. AT other times, it is relatively easy to get a friend to drive you the two miles or so over to where the bus comes. Tickets are discounted if you buy them on campus, and relatively inexpensive.

City of Beloit buses, which run out to Wal Mart and other places in town, stop a block from campus. The school also runs shuttles on various nights/days to different parts of town, particularly the Wal Mart shopping center. My daughter did not have a car last year but does have one this year. She says she rarely uses it, except for going out to eat sometimes and buying art supplies she can't get from the bookstore. By the way, if you are doing an internship, the college has several cars that they will loan to students to get to and from internships.

On the subject of internships, can someone speak on how greased are the wheels at Beloit to get internships for its students? Where do they go?

My D is doing her internship this semester in Madison. She travels up twice a week. The contact info with the internship was done through the school. She went for an interview, and started about a week or so ago. The school has info and contact information available, but one can do their own legwork as long as the internship is acceptable to the school.

that is amazing that she secured an internship in Madison when there is only another 40- 50,000 other students at UW who would like that opportunity.

the implied question from my last post - HOW does Beloit secure those iternships given 40-50k kids at madison all want that kind of stuff, too?

I cannot answer that. The school gave her information on who to contact. She had to go up for an interview.

My last question was less a question on the nuts and bolts of acquiring internships at Beloit, and more an expression of amazement that a little college such as Beloit can compete with UW-M in this area.

also, I heard on the news that Beloit recvd something like 20 inches of snow.

true?

Beloit students: how does the campus look and feel now?

a winter wonderland?
*like that hotel in *The Shining
?

20" - true
Said amount was 22", but I got a report that it looked only like 15 or so!
D has developed a love/hate relationship with the snow. She still calls home when the first snow comes and whenever there is a large amount. Last night she reported her first slip and fall in her 4 years.

my d has a requirement for snow. But she has not yet recvd her driver's license. Snow is a ton of fun, then. We are going up to Beloit this Monday for a visit.

How was your visit?

Beloit typically gets less snow than Madison, quite a bit less this winter. Though today, they're in a band that was projected to get 8 inches, while in Madison we're getting far less. Both ice and snow have been brutal this winter. Global warming doesn't usually look and feel like this!

The college is very pretty in the snow.

goin' manana instead of last lunes.
