Could anyone give me more information about Beloit College please? Beloit is an isolated college in the boader of WI and IL right? Is there transportation on campus? And is there any Vietnamese students at beloit? How about Pre-med program at the school?

I just posted a full report of a trip to Beloit that my daughter and I made last week on the parents board - look for the post titled Midwest Trip Report: Earlham, Beloit, Knox.

My daughter was very impressed with the faculty she met and interacted with at Beloit, less so with the campus itself (it's nice but small), and thought the town was OK. We didn't notice many Asians on campus off hand (Diversity is a big issue for my daughter). Beloit's largest majors are social sciences, visual and performing arts, and English, not science so I'm not sure about their pre-med. The nearest airport is Chicago and it's about a two hour drive there. There is bus service available to and from both Chicago airports. There would be no real need for transportation on campus - it is a small, walkable campus. The town is within walking distance as well.

You may want to check out Earlham College in Indiana - they do have a very, very strong science and pre-med program and the size and feel are very similiar to Beloit. Much more diversity there as well, including many asians. It's an easy 35 minute drive from the Dayton airport and the school runs shuttles to the airport on vacations (also seemed pretty easy to get a ride there). Earlham is good about providing shuttle services to local shopping areas and I thought the actual town was a bit nicer than Beloit. Campus had a very warm and friendly feel.

The trip report mentioned above has more details.

My son attends Beloit and loves it. I met a number of Asian students when visiting him, but I don't know if any were Vietnamese. The international student community, though small, is vibrant. The school provides shuttle service around town and there are buses to Chicago locations and both airports. A car really isn't necessary. Even my very wheel-conscious, car-loving California boy son admits that. Academics are excellent, profs are accessible, and a very large proportion of students go on to graduate school. I don't know about strengths in science and pre-med, so I urge you to investigate My perception is that students are very happy there and very enthused about their education.

Thanks a lot for your information. I appriciate them.
I'll read more about the post you metionned, Carolyn. Do you know that we can take courses at the other school, like Earlham College while we are attending full time at Beloit College or not? I intend to be major in Pre-med, though I am not sure right now. I may change while I am there. Just curious about their variety on the school' s academic courses.

What is your son's major, lalady? Do you know anything about the school's study abroad program(s)?

And how about the dorm? Which one is more convenient for girls who want to have fun, but not too much, no smoking, no drinking and maybe not coed dorm. Any oipnions on this matter?

Jadedog, What really impressed my daughter at Beloit during her visit was her faculty interactions. I would encourage your son to ask admissions to schedule some one on one meetings with faculty while he is there in the areas he may be interested in studying. He should also sit in on several classes.

Uyen, there is an all girls dorm at Beloit. The coed dorms have coed bathrooms. Beloit takes the attitude that students are adults and take a pretty hands off approach to drinking and drugs --- feedback I have from several sources is that both occur but are not out of hand and that there is plenty to do if you don't want to party. Asdad may know if they have a substance free dorm there. Earlham does have a substance free dorm and does not allow smoking in the dorms (we were amused to see kids standing in the rain smoking outside). While Earlham is technically a "dry campus" students told us it is more like pleasantly damp - drinking does occur, as does pot smoking but it is not the focus of social life on campus. As at most schools, I'm sure there are people who over indulge at both Beloit and Earlham.

It would be impossible to take classes at Earlham - they are a good six hour drive apart. I do not think there are any other colleges close enough to Beloit to take classes at (UW Madison is 50 miles away). By the way, Earlham appears to have the larger biology/pre-med program over Beloit so I would suggest you look there as well.

Beloit's study abroad programs are quite good and they have a large international student population on campus as well.

Lalady and Asdad - a question from my daughter: Is there a movie theater in Beloit? If so, does the school shuttle service make regular runs to it?

Carolyn, I answered in another post, but again: Yes there is the "Luxury 10" theater complex. Beloit does provide transportation to it, but not that often. My daughter seems to see all of the new movies and she does not have a car.
I will check on substance free dorms and reply when I find out.

Hello,
May I ask you a question? What is the substance free dorm? Which dorm is the best? Near to all the places. I remember that someone mentioned beloit has the underground tunnel system which connects all the dorms together and to the dining hall, is it right? So it means we, students, don not have to walk outside to go to eat during winter? All girls dorm sounds good to me. I am actually living in the all girls dorm this year. I don't think I like coed dorm with coed bathroom. lol.

So Beloit doesn't have the theater on campus, does it? We have to take the bus to go to the movie? I wish they would have one on campus? How about other activities? Swimming pool, food, volleyball, tennis and so forth.

oh two more questions. As all the descriptions, it seems to me that Beloit is not as friendly as many other schools. Is that true, asdad? How does your daughter feel about Beloit campus life? And can you ask her about this too. if I want to join matching band, do i need to know some basic stuff to be able to do that?
oh Yeah, how about the weather? iS it really bad there?
Thank you.
Uyen.

609 is the substance free dorm. Bushnell 1,2, & 3 are alcohol free. Friendliness of the student body is individual, I guess. My D thought/thinks it is extremely friendly.
Movies are shown on campus, just not the new releases.
It does get cold. We are from the South, and she has not had a problem adjusting. The tunnels connect some areas, but not all. I am not sure what connects to what.
I know nothing about the band.

hey, i go to beloit... it is very friendly, and a good fit for me, but maybe not for you...

premed is good here, i assume; anthro is stellar, as is biology, two good majors for premed

activities: well, there is no marching band at beloit, we're very apathetic about sports. it is really easy for people to play any varsity sport with any level of ability; we have tennis and volleyball. musicwise, not great, but good for the recreational player. concert band and orchestra are just now picking themselves up. we get free movies at Luxury ten as well, and you can see older movies on campus.

weather: not too cold, just gloomy, and wet (at least for me; my hometown gets like 5 inches of precip a year). it gets cloudy and stays cloudy all winter. fair bit of snow as well. And only about half of the dorms are in the buildings connected to commons; expect to be outside alot.

diversity: people say beloit isn't diverse enough; i don't have a problem with it. very international, and students from all over the US. it's just that there's still a majority of white kids.

How did your daughter find her way to Wisconsin from Georgia? I'm always fascinated with the independent kids who are willing to go with their gut to a school in unfamiliar territory.

Beloit kept popping up towards the top on all of our college searches (USN&WR, PR, etc.). We had never heard of it. I gave D the option to "at least go and visit, you do not even have to apply if you don't want to." We went. She had an overnight and I think it was her first choice from then on. A good choice.
