belongings

I spoke with the call center today and the woman said that we should be able to have our students things shipped in the next few weeks. She said that she couldn't guarantee a date but it would be soon.
The weather is beginning to change at my daughter's school and she is feeling the need to add some long-sleeved clothing and shoes more than flip flop sandals. I am glad to hear that I will only need to spring for a few new items to tide her over.
I just got the credit card bill that included charges in NO, Houston, D's last minute plane fare home from Houston, replacing a min number of items and flights and hotel at the new school. Then yesterday the bill for room and board at the new school. Painful to see it all laid out.
Our hotel in NO was not on the bill I am wondering if the hotel was looted and the records lost. I was curious to check the bill since we had checked out earlier then planned.

Mom60, that's good news about your daughter's things. I will keep my fingers crossed that it is sooner than later.

I think there's a very good possibility that the hotel charges from NO may never show up on your bill.

Our bills were pretty scary, too. We had to go ahead with the winter clothing purchases since our son is in Ithaca. It's already cold, and now he's sick too!

But, like you, our one-night stay at the Iberville never came in. I wonder whether it ever will?

Roll Wave/Save NOLA Wristbands

Through one of President Cowens chat rooms on a Friday night and another person from the Tulane Administration my son and I received permission via the chat room and eamil to design wristbands to sell with all the proceeds except for shipping going to the univrsity and other areas of need that President Cowen should deem necessary to get the infrastructure ready for our kids to go back in January. I don't know if this is allowed to be poste on this site, but it is a way of reaching out to all Tulane supporters. Check out my son's web site. It is savetulane.com. You can order a wristband from the site. we have purchased the domain for a year. I have designed and purchased 1000 wristbands to sell, and I assure you, each and every penny will go to Tulane and the rebuilding of the surrounding community. My son is anxiously awaiting his return to Tulane in January and presently taking a semster at the University of Miami. I also have a student that should be a freshman at Tulane living with me for the semester. We are from the Boston area and he is currently attending BU and also anxiously awaiting to get back to Tulane and officially start his freshman year. So spread the word and please show your sign of support by proudly wearing a wristband. It's green with the T and the wave and Roll Wave on one side and Save NOLA on the othr side. All done with permission from the administration, legally, honestly and ethically.........ROLL WAVE!!!!!!!!

Great idea. off to visit the site

Thanks....for your reply. I'm looking forward to making this a real success. My son was so depressed when he had to leave his house on Broadway, we told him he needed to move in a positive direction anddo something for Tulane and we would back the costs and this is what he chose and you know how hard it was to get permission for the copyrighted Roll Wave and the T with the wave when there was only a chat room once a week, but we visited that chat every week for the first three weeks and President Cowen himself finally answered us and then he had someone ellse from the administration email me the permission for the company. He was so excited. And the success we are having is amazing. People have been so generous.

Here I go, too!

Website tonight says we will get info tomorrow on how and when we can
get stuff from the dorms. I'm currently thinking of having the laptop
mailed and hoping my son can live without the clothes which are there,
until he gets back. I figure to leave all school supplies, linens,
toiletries etc. in place. What are others planning? I'm making a trip
from here to California at the end of October/early Nov for a
week, so I suppose I could try to schedule a stopover in NOLA, but
that would probably be mucho $$, so not a top choice.

I am hoping we can get her stuff sent. The woman at the call center said all the dorms were packed up but on another blog I read that only the Monroe dorm was packed up. Her roommate never moved in so everything in the room is hers. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that one. It would be very expensive to have to actually go there to pick the stuff up. She is now at the coldest spot in the Nation the last 2 days so she is really wanting her pants and long sleeved shirts and closed toe shoes. She has gotten by without her printer without a problem but she is a girl and clothes are important to her.
My D made the decision to withdraw so we will take everything. They have told her she can change her mind but she is pretty sure she won't go back. She has a really hard time adapting to change and she knows for her it would be to difficult to move again so soon. Plus her experience on her 1 day at Tulane was not positive. I had hoped she would reconsider and she still might. She isn't loving her school but she is trying. She also feels strongly that she doesn't want to get sick. She has bad allergies including mold and asthma that she doesn't do a great job of keeping under control. (she uses an inhaler almost daily).
I am hoping she ends up at least deciding to stay permanently at her present school since I would hate to have to go through the whole application process again.
Or she is so unpredictable that we could get all her stuff and then have her change her mind and decide to go back to Tulane.

Mom60 - lots on your plate! I, too, just dreaded the idea of the application process over again (ironic since I spend WAYY to much time on this college admissions site) which I'm sure so many of us freshman parents worried about in the early days after evacuation. I feel for you with the continued uncertainty. Here's hoping she settles on a decision soon.

Anyone going? the Butler date doesn't work for us. I have friends with relatives down there, so maybe one of them will go over for us and pack up what we want. Anyone have other ideas/plans?

We will just leave it all where it is and assume it's okay. We just can't leave work to go down there and then the same distance north to get it to him. It doesn't make any sense to have a $3K computer shipped so he can have it for a couple of extra months, either. He's been fine so far, so he'll be fine until January. It's been expensive enough making two move-in trips. We're too tapped out to make journeys just for STUFF. Besides, now they're saying that most of the kids have their stuff still in the same room they left it in. I'm hoping that's so.

Based on my call to the Call Center today, I'm quite sure that for most kids, the stuff is right in their room. We would have liked to get the computer, and the long pants so as not to replace them, but if there's not a cheap 'n easy way, we'll just wait for January and the Grand Return.

Oh, I LIKE that--Grand Return!! It's going to be a PARTY, isn't it?

My son was assigned to Monroe so his stuff is now in Reilly. The info on the website wasn't clear re coming to pick up a few things. We don't want to get everything now, but he really needs some of his stuff. Since we're within driving distance (8 hours), we do plan to be there. I'm hoping we can get the things he really wants (plus a few "valuables" he'd left behind), and leave the rest.

We had just finished putting everything away the day they cleared us out of the dorms, so having his stuff moved out wasn't the best news! I really don't want to move him in----again! All things considered though, it could be worse. At least we know his dorm room was in good shape.

I'm in Butler too, but personally making the flight down there just isn't economical at all. Have there been any estimates on how much it might cost to send stuff back home? I imagine it would depend on weight and distance, but I would really like some of that stuff back.

curiouser and vinin - I had a conversation with the call center. It is definitely possible to go, on the appointed day(s) for your dorm, and pick up only some of your items (instead of all) if you are planning to return for spring term. You can, as the website says, have someone else go in your stead, with written signed permission from you.

There is not an arrangement for a paid vendor to send stuff back, unfortunately. Vinin, I too had hoped for that option. I got the impression that they have had others asking for this option, and am hoping to see it addressed in a future FAQ. But that is only a hope.

If I knew of a reliable resource for going in, I would use it as we only want the laptop and a a few pair of pants. I am checking with the few personal friends we have with NOLA connections, but no luck so far. Also will try to connect with some of the families at the same visiting school as he is. He hasn't been able to reach his roommate, so don't even know whether roomie is returning yet.

Obviously, DS can live without if necessary but he feels just like Vinin.

jmmom, my son is trying to get a deal from Orbitz to get down there himself. PM me if you want to try to work something out.

Sorry, jmmom. I have to retract because it's too late to edit. We discovered that our friends in Metairie have both of their sons with them because their homes were destryoed, so there's no room for our son to stay there. Consequently, the cost of the trip would be too high to go get stuff from his perspective, too. We'll just do without for now.

jmmom- I am also hoping they work out something where you can pay someone to pack the stuff and ship. One person I spoke with at the call center said they were going to offer that as an option but then today my husband spoke with someone who said they are working on it but there is a liability issue of having the moving company pack it without you present that needs to be addressed.
Her weekend is the same as parents weekend at her present school. We wanted to go but the airfare is expensive. My husband could go to Tulane and pack her for less then flying to parents weekend. Strangely it is $250 less to fly from Ca to NO with a plane change in Denver then flying Ca to Denver(exact same flight for the Ca leg of the trip). So it is cheaper getting her to a city twice as far from home.
I would like my D to see Tulane again just to confirm that she really doesn't want to go back. But I don't know if it will happen.
I am also having her look into going with one of the other Tulane kids and their parent and that would be reasonable. The other problem is finding a hotel that has a room available.
The call center did say that she could have a friend pack up her dorm on his date even though it was different then hers.
