Bending Rules on the Waitlist? Could use help from Byerly

I was wait-listed at Harvard:

I'd choose Cornell over Harvard 8 times out of 10. My dad however (I'm Chinese stereotypical Asianness coming up :p) wants me to send the deposit to Cornell and take the acceptance, but stay on Harvard's wait-list. If Harvard takes me, he says Cornell can keep the deposit and wants me at Harvard instead

Is this even allowed? Don't the Ivies share admissions info with each other?

Yes it is "allowed".

There is nothing wrong with surrendering a deposit if you are prepared to do so.

The waitlist hopping goes on long after the date on which deposits are due. Look at it as a game of musical chairs: College "A" admits someone from the waitlist on May 20 who has made a deposit at College "B". College "B" then fills the resulting vacancy from its waitlist, who probably surrenders a deposit at College "C" in order to accept, and so on, etc etc etc.

Thanks a lot!

sounds like a business i'd want to be in, musical chairs w/ peoples' money

how much is the deposit?

Harvard has no deposit.

My friend said the deposit for Cornell is around $400.

If we send in the reply form and deposit for a college, will the waitlist school find out?
