Benefit of Minors

Hey everyone

I'll be attending UC Berkeley this upcoming Fall as a double major in engineering. My double major is Chemical Engineering / Nuclear Engineering. I wanted to pursue this double because I wanted to get knowledge on how to produce electricity through nuclear fission/fusion reactions. However, when I went to my orientation, I found out my obtaining the College of Engineering Announcement that there is a double major in EECS/NE which is Electrical Engineering and Computer Science / Nuclear Engineering.

Anyways, they faculty won't let me change my major so I was considering a minor in EECS. Does anyone know what the benefits of a minor in engineering would be? Is the EECS Minor indicated on your bachelors degree? Would I be able to go to grad school as an EECS major even though I do not hold a bachelors degree in EECS. I am also considering the overload that I'll be taking because the ChemE/NE curriculum is very fixed and does not allow that many "outside courses". Thanks in advance!!

bump.........

If you are going to Berkeley and you are doing a double major, as long as you come out with a decent GPA, you should have a wide choice of grad schools to choose from, and good ones at that. Don't worry about a minor unless you absolutely like the subject, b/c it will probably be hard enough to manage a double major.

the 'double majors' in engineering at cal aren't really double majors. all majors require electives and if you're a double, some of your electives are replaced (in a sense) by classes in your other major. in the end, all the programs (single or double) end up with around 120 units. and you'll only get one piece of paper in the end. sucks. ha.

so, essentially, by skipping some prereqs with your AP's and a few summer sessions (math, physics, sometimes cs are offered), a minor wouldn't be -too- difficult. i think cheme's are required to take e77 which places you out of cs61a. replace cheme's ee100 requirement with ee40 (which is also offered most summers). just play around with your schedule if you really want it.

thanks psquared and flippityflop. I will be replacing E77 with CS 61A. However, does anyone know if that minor will be indicated on your BS Degree? Thanks
