My son is a Junior who will be applying to very competitive colleges
Today we found out some students at school are taking the AP English language test without having taken the class
It is too late for him to sign up now . However, is there really a benefit to taking an AP test without having taken the class? Do the colleges favor more AP tests whether or not you have taken the class?

They certainly do. As a junior myself, I self-studied 4 of my 7 exams last year, and I am self-studying 5 of my 7 exams this year (including AP Lit). Self-studying is terrific in that AP scores are definitely a plus for the college admission process, as well as a great way to get credit for college courses you don’t want to take. If you would like some advice as to which AP’s are easier to self-study, feel free to ask.

Furthermore, colleges will ntoice it if you did not take a class but still did well. This shows initiative and dedication, traits needed in the college environment and thus weighed in the application process.
