Hi everyone. I’m currently a high school student and am heavily considering law school down the line. However, as a back up if I don’t get into a top 14 law school, I want an undergrad major that has good job prospects. My passion is politics and have an initial gravitation toward political science, but my speciality is economic policy and an economics major could be a good option. Because I am doing an economics research internship, I think I have the skills to do a PPE (politics, philosophy, economics program like at UPENN, Yale or UMichigan) or a public policy degree so I can pursue my multiple interests, do research and prepare for law school. However, what are my job prospects with this type of degree and would I able to get any job an economics major would able to get? Is it better just to major in a specific subject sutch as economics or political science? Thanks.
When you go to a college like Penn, Yale, or Michigan, your job prospects are usually connected far more to the college you went to than they are to the exact major you select. I’ve seen humanities and social science majors from schools like Penn, Michigan, and Yale go into finance, banking, and consulting. So PPE or economics - either of them would be a good choice.
Usually PPE majors do not take all of the same courses that economics majors do - their coursework is usually more evenly distributed between the three fields, and their economics courses tend to be more related to political economy than they are to the economics business and finance. So no, it’s not exactly the same consideration, but still useful for obtaining employment beyond college.
