Berea College - Its tuition and fees are $910

A 40-year-old friend was telling me about the college she graduated from as she was happily sending in a donation. She loved it and still does. I was kind of shocked when she told me that basicly all the students attend for free. Thought it might help someone, so I posted it here. What do you think?

The Basics About Berea College (Per USNEWS)

Oh well, I thought it was interesting…

Berea isn’t the only school of its kind; it’s part of the Work College consortium. Warren Wilson, the College of the Ozarks (12% admit rate), and a few others are also included.

Unlike many other schools that cover all or much of one’s costs (Deep Springs, Olin, Cooper Union, etc.), Berea requires most of its students to be fairly poor (~90%, I think). It was intended to provide a solid (Christian) education to underperforming/impoverished students in Appalachia.

There are at least seven “Work Colleges” in the US where students help manage the day-to-day affairs of the institution in exchange for a free education. [Welcome to the Work Colleges Consortium! | http://workcolleges.org](http://www.workcolleges.org/)

Berea would want its students to be severely poor as it states in its website.

Happymom, not all of the work colleges offer a free education. Berea and College of the Ozarks do not charge tuition. I think most, if not all, of the others do charge tuition and it looks like the average debt for Sterling grads is around $22K.

Thanks for the update on debt load! I haven’t looked at these places in detail for a long time and just pulled the link out of my bookmarks.
