Berkeley Dorms

I wanted to know about a few things about dorms and housing since I am international and cannot visit UC Berkeley before the housing deadline so this will very useful for me and for many hopefully:

Which dorm has a private bathrooms or at least shared among no more than 4 people?

Which dorm has the most spacious bedrooms?

As a freshmen I wish to live in a double (singles will be to lonely and triples and quads way to crowded) can I chose this? How does it work?

Where is the best dinner or the top two for you?

By personal experience which dorm will you recommend the most based on your opinion and why?

Which are the closest dorms with above preferences closest to the College of Engineering?

How does the housing application work on Berkeley? Any advice?

If I (hopefully not) don't like my dorm or my roomates, is it wasy or difficult to change dorms or room?

(Out of topic) 9. What percent of people have cars at Berkeley? Will you recommend having a car?

(Out of topic) 10. How widespread is alcohol and drug consumption in Berkeley? I don't care about it (it's a personal decision) as long people also honor my decision? Is it true that there is a substance free dorm?

Thanks in advance for your time and complete responses.

Also anymore information will be greatly appreciated!

GO BEARS!!

1. Which dorm has a private bathrooms or at least shared among no more than 4 people?

Minisuites in Units have their own bathroom for 5 people. Not sure about the other buildings.

2. Which dorm has the most spacious bedrooms?

Foothill; there’s this one building in unit 3, I forget its name, but getting that building would be all up to chance.

3. As a freshmen I wish to live in a double (singles will be to lonely and triples and quads way to crowded) can I chose this? How does it work?

You’ll get an email or a notification from your My Berkeley App on when to start applying. You just put your top 4 choices (last choice is anything they give you to be guaranteed for housing) and then it’s a lotto or some crap like that. You’ll have floor bathrooms though.

4. Where is the best dinner or the top two for you?

No such thing. You’ll get used to it all after a month or so, and then hate it. Eat out every once in a while.

5. By personal experience which dorm will you recommend the most based on your opinion and why?

Units because they’re the cheapest

6. Which are the closest dorms with above preferences closest to the College of Engineering?

Foothill from what I’ve heard. One of the more expensive ones though. Could also try for the single sex halls, which are on Northside.

7. How does the housing application work on Berkeley? Any advice?

They just ask you for what meal plan you want (get the regular, avoid premium), ask some basic questions to match you up (not very specific), and ask you for your list of preferred rooming options (top 4, fifth choice must be anything you give me)

i 8. What percent of people have cars at Berkeley? Will you recommend having a car?*

Not one freshman I’ve met came with a car. The more fun venues are outside of the immediate Berkeley area, but you can take the bus for that, just if you’re going to do that late at night, try to have some people around you. Don’t really need one, in all honesty.

9. How widespread is alcohol and drug consumption in Berkeley? I don’t care about it (it’s a personal decision) as long people also honor my decision? Is it true that there is a substance free dorm?

I think the first few weeks, almost all freshman go out and have some fun (first time those kiddies aren’t on a leash), and then it mellows out. Some go to frats regularly and some stop, some go once in a while, and some grow out of frats and go clubbing. Nobody’s gonna hassle you for having different beliefs, just don’t try annoying them by having a “holier than thou” attitude. There is a substance free dorm, it’s in unit 1, but chances are it won’t really matter.

right, also this:

housing.berkeley.edu

just read it up and you’ll do fine. welcome to cal :D

You should live in the units for your first year, it’s the best place to get a real college experience. The doubles are decently sized and the shared bathrooms are no big deal at all. You’ll meet the most people and have the most fun. Don’t worry if it isn’t close to the engineering buildings, most of the classes you take freshman year will be big math/science classes that are spread out all over campus. And I agree with lolumad about the alcohol/drug consumption thing. Whether or not you drink doesn’t matter at all as long as you don’t have a bad attitude about it.

I personally recommend unit 3 :)

I would recommend foothill. It is more expensive but the rooms are bigger, you end up in a suite and you and your suitemates can become very close. You can get unlucky and be in a super anti-social suite or something but most of the suites seem to get along fairly well. It’s on northside so it’s much closer to engineering buildings and because of that most of the student body is made up of engineers. It can be nice when you have some common ground and common classes to talk about with the people you live near. Also, generally less people drink/party, again it depends on the suite but in my experience me and my friends generally don’t party (though some go out occasionally) but we’re still social and hang out with each other on weekend nights and everything. Also, the bathrooms will be shared by WAY less people then in the units, and each suite has a common room (the units to do but again more people using it) which can be nice and almost makes your suite feel like an apartment.

1. Which dorm has a private bathrooms or at least shared among no more than 4 people?

It totally depends. One of my friends lives in Foothill where the bathroom is shared by less than 10 people. However, another friend in Foothill shares it with a lot of people. I don’t know the exact number, and Foothill would have less people (and less stalls) but the ratio of shower stalls to people is probably the same as in a Unit floor. In the Stern suites (NOT the mini-suites), I think it’s 6-10 (I forget the number) to their own private bathroom.

2. Which dorm has the most spacious bedrooms?
Foothill does have the biggest rooms dimensions-wise, but they are long and narrow. The Units have smaller rooms, but their furniture is relatively smaller and more compact so you have more open space. Stern rooms are bigger than the Units, but depending on which wing you get, there’s a little or a lot of open space (there’s different furniture depending on where you live). In Bowles, it can be hit or miss. The guys live in quads, and I know people with huge common rooms and relatively large bedrooms. However, I know people living in quads that are substantially smaller.

3. As a freshmen I wish to live in a double (singles will be to lonely and triples and quads way to crowded) can I chose this? How does it work?
Yeah, you can. I don’t think you can get a single as a freshman, anyways. Foothill quads are HUUUGE, fyi. But yeah, the housing office does try to get you your first choice. If you choose a Unit double though, be aware that those are popular and you may end up in a Unit triple.

4. Where is the best dinner or the top two for you?
The Asian Ghetto/Durant Food Court is easy to get to and there’s lots of options. The restaurants down on Telegraph are pretty good, too. If you live in the Units, both are close by. It’s not far from Foothill/Stern/Bowles, but your walk is a bit longer. However, if I really want something nice and don’t mind walking/taking the bus (can take 20+ minutes), I go all the way to College and Ashby or Shattuck (North has more better options than South, in my opinion).

5. By personal experience which dorm will you recommend the most based on your opinion and why?
Keep in mind that the quality of dorms depend a lot on your neighbors.

I live in Stern, the all girls dorm and a lot of people say it’s antisocial (and they’re usually going off stereotypes and not from personal experience). However, my hall is incredibly social. I’ve also made friends on all the floors and most of the halls. We do go out, etc. However, there are definitely some girls who never open their doors or go out. There are a couple of girls in my hall who I wouldn’t recognize because I’ve never seen them. Stern does tend to be quieter, but it’s definitely not silent. It also gets incredibly loud when people come back from partying. It’s really what you make of it. My roommate hated Stern and I loved it so much I’m returning next year. The quality of the rooms themselves depend on where you get put. My room has a terrible view, but good ventilation, furniture, etc. Another hallmate got a fantastic view (of the bay!) and good furniture. Another hallmate got smelly furniture and horrible walls (peeling paint, etc.) and she hears the garbage truck at 7am every morning. Socially, I would group Foothill and Bowles with Stern.

I sort of group Unit 1 and 2 together. Their rooms are really nice and clean. Unit 2 is really far from campus though. People say the northside dorms are far, but we’re across the street from Haas, Pimentel, and Stanley. If I have a 30 minute break between classes, I can leave from Dwinelle, have a quick lunch in my room, and be back in time for class in Giannini. My friends in Unit 1 sometimes can do that depending on their building/floor, but my friends in Unit 2 says it’s near impossible. Social life depends on your neighbors, but I think these two tend to be more social.

The people I know in Unit 3 tend to live in either really quiet halls or really loud dorms. One of my friends in Unit 3 actually goes to Stern to socialize because her hall is dead. I visit my other friends in Unit 3 often, and once they had a hall beer pong party on a Wednesday night. So yeah, social life depends on your neighbors. The rooms are pretty nice, but not as good as Unit 1 and 2 in my opinion. It’s definitely the closest to Sproul and that general area though.

Clark Kerr has big rooms, great food (but little options if you’re a vegetarian), but is pretty far away from campus.

6. Which are the closest dorms with above preferences closest to the College of Engineering?
Foothill/Stern/Bowles are really close to the math/science buildings. Like less than 5 minutes close if you live in the right room.

7. How does the housing application work on Berkeley? Any advice?
Remember to put “any choice” or else you might not get a room. I also wouldn’t recommend picking a roommate.

8. If I (hopefully not) don’t like my dorm or my roomates, is it wasy or difficult to change dorms or room?
Before move-in day, if you really hate your dorm and want to switch to another, it’s not hard. Just contact the office as quickly as possible. You’re more or less stuck with your roommates, but if you can get your RA on your side or something, there’s a chance. It’s easier (but still hard) to drop your housing contract than switch when the year starts.

i 9. What percent of people have cars at Berkeley? Will you recommend having a car?*
It’s really expensive to have a car. Unless you have a practical use for it/don’t mind paying ~$100 bucks for a parking spot every month, there’s no use in having a car.

i 10. How widespread is alcohol and drug consumption in Berkeley? I don’t care about it (it’s a personal decision) as long people also honor my decision? Is it true that there is a substance free dorm?*

Unit 1 has a substance free dorm. I don’t drink/do drugs, but my roommate does. It only affects me when she comes home drunk late at night and wakes me up. People do ask you to “experiment,” but they don’t get mad if you say no. I know a lot of people who drink/do drugs, and a lot who don’t, and they get along just fine.

Anyway, if you’re a girl, I do recommend Stern because we get big rooms (at the same price as the Units) and if you make an effort, you’ll see the people are awesome. If not, I recommend Unit 1 or 3.

Thanks a ton for your input guys, I’m starting to get a feel of housing. There appears to be many options.

Also are the Units made of other various dorms within it? So if I apply to a unit will a get a random dorm within?

For my situation and expectations, which will you puntually suggest:

a) I’m a guy in the College of Engineering but I was wondering if its really necessary to live near it? How is transportation? I want to be really nearby. Or should I not care since my freshmen classes are not specifically in the College of Engineering but all over? I want relative proximity to my classes and also food.

b) Are floors coed? Which? I want as coed as possible except obviously for the room. :P

c) I’m glad people are non-judgemental about drugs and alcohol both ways, love that. Where I live people tend to be more ignorant. But the thing is I want to have a great college experience, date, etc. as I like to socialize and also party/club every other week but curiously I don’t drink or smoke. I want to meet TONS of open-minded, intelligent, life-enjoying people as myself basically. I know I’m going to the right place  But what dorm will be more open and social.

d) Still I also plan to study very hard and dedicate time to my studies in engineering which are very important for me. So play hard, work hard.

e)Semi-private bathrooms and suites with living room is important for me as I like to have my privacy and not be waken.

This is all, or perhaps I’m asking for too much? I hope I could see it for myself next month but can’t. You guys are really helping me and many others, I really appreciate it!

Which dorms will be best for my expectations and priorities?

Quick question. is every dorm a triple? or do I get to pick a double or single?
Also, can you pick which dorm you want to live at or is it automatically assigned to you?

Perhaps Foothill fulfills all but the social part? or not?

Where is the gym at Berkeley? What is the name of the facility?

From my understanding you get to pick your choice and a lotto gives you the few choices.

Dr. P -

a) While Foothill would be the closest to your engineering classes, I don’t think its entirely necessary to live near by.

b) Most floors are co-ed, with some exceptions. Some floors in the units are single-sex and the smaller suites in Foothill are single-sex. And of course there’s Bowles and Stern.

c) If you’re looking for more open and social, Unit 3.

e) Foothill suites have a common room in them and I guess semi-private if you live in a small suite. You would share with about 7 other guys.

About the social aspect of Foothill, that’s something I was worried about too. It does have a reputation of being more on the quiet side, but I found that it really depends suite to suite. There is definitely a opportunity in Foothill to meet great people and have a good time, but you’re risking it. I have heard some stories of anti-social suites with people that stay in their dark rooms and play computer games.

mkskycastle2 -

Not every dorm is a triple. You get to choose whether you want a double or triple. It’s really difficult to get a single because they are reserved for students with disabilities. You will fill out a housing application where you will give your preferences. It goes something like “Unit 2 double”, “Unit 2 triple”, “Unit 3 double”. You can go to housing.berkeley.edu to find out more.

It sounds like you have gotten some good answers to your questions as far as housing, but I just wanted to point out that you dont have THAT MUCH control over housing. While you get to list your preference, It is very likely that you will get put in a triple when you want a double. It is highly unlikely that you will get a dorm with a private bathroom or even one shared with a small group of people. It is POSSIBLE. But don’t be surprised if you dont get what you want. But I promise, you will still have a good year! the res halls are great and you will get used to sharing a bathroom with lots of people. GOOD LUCK!

I hear Clark is really far off. Is it really a problem? How do people pull if off if they most don’t own cars? Bicycle? How is public transportation within? How much will it take you to get to the north side of campus from Clark in a bus?

Sorry for being so curious  but I am extremely exited and what to know everything I can! Thanks again.

GO BEARS

I can make it pretty simple for you.

If you’re into making friends and getting the “regular” college experience, choose any of the Units. Unit 2 is a little far from campus, but other than that, they’re all pretty solid. Unit 3 is kind of ugly, but it has its own caf and a little market where you can buy cereal, granola bars etc.

As a freshman, your courses will be all over the place. Location is not a big deal as you will be doing things like breadth courses and reading/writing requirements in other parts of campus too. Don’t pick a place like Foothill just because its close to Stanley (engineering building).

Just know that a freshman getting a minisuite is basically unheard of, so your best bet is a double room in a Unit. Besides, the bathroom is where you make friends  (no, not like that, you dirty kids).

And to answer your previous question, yes. Clark Kerr is HELLA far away. Most people bike or bus. Transit system is good and its included in your tuition fees (you’ll be given a sticker to put on your CalID card).

It’s good that you’re so stoked, I sure was :). Check out housing.berkeley.edu too. It’s quite helpful.

Any idea how good Cal is with pairing up roommates?

to answer an earlier question our gym is called the RSF ($10 a semester for students) and its located on dana and bancroft.

for HISbeloved: its pretty random to be honest.

@HISbeloved: If you’re asking about pairing you up with roommates you list that you request, I’ve heard good experiences for the most part. If you list someone else as a preferred roommate (and your friend(s) list you as well), they’ll try to accommodate you in terms of being with the people you list. I listed two other roommates for a triple and everyone listed one another. We even matched each other up on the questions they ask regarding preferences they ask (what time you sleep, etc.). The reason why I think you usually get paired up with your requests because why create a random pairing that could go wrong when you can satisfy people’s request and most likely have no problems there.

All of you must list the others for this to work. You will also need to have your room preference types (dorm and type of room) synchronized or at least compatible.
