btw. . .if I request all of my top four choices to be single gender, does that mean I’ll for sure get it. …? or will there still be a chance of me getting stuck in a co-ed dorm.

@shoppingdiva92: I don’t know for sure if you’ll get it for sure, but if you clearly indicate in your top choices that you want to be on a single-gender floor (and perhaps even include a note about your desired preference somewhere on the housing application), I’m sure you’d probably get a single gender floor or dorm. Only a small amount of people clearly request a single-gender dorm, so I’m sure the housing department would want to satisfy a student who “wants” a “less-demanded” area than have to deal with problems later.

oh really? ok thanks so much bigaus =)

No problem. Glad to have helped. If it really is a big concern, I would contact the people in charge of housing before or after you submit it and let them know about it and that will probably help your chances.

ok thanks, I’ll be sure to do that. =)

Yeah, it’s a lot easier getting single sex floors or Stern (especially Stern) if asking for it than getting co-ed, although, seriously, after about 5 minutes, you get used to it. Also, if you really need privacy, there’s the “quiet” rooms in the units on the ground floors.

Are the toilets in the dorms in stalls or do each toilet have walls and a door? I don’t like doing my business in stalls so I just want to know, lol.

At least what I know in Units 1, 2, & 3, the toilets are in stalls with doors. So yes, you’ll be side-by-side other people when doing “your business”. I think the suites may be more like walls and a door kind of set up, but I don’t know for sure.

the minisuites is like a completely separate room, foothill suites are still stalls. Hey it’s better than urinals WITHOUT wall separation.

In the units, I think the stall doors are really really tall and so are the walls on the side. Someone correct me if I’m wrong because I dont live there. In Foothill, the stall doors are normal sized.

GoBears2013 is right, in the units the stall doors (and shower walls) are tall.

Are all units the same? Each building has the same kind of rooms and layout but only their names are different?

@stevenboi27: Well, Units 1 & 2 are similar to each other in terms of the style & types of rooms. Some buildings in those units are older, but some have been renovated recently and they look recognizably different both inside and out. Also, units 1 & 2 are the units that have suites. However, you have no control in which building you prefer, just the unit and occupancy of rooms.

As for Unit 3, it’s 4 towers are older and the floors look different than the new floors of Units 1 & 2. However, just because one is older/newer, doesn’t necessarily make it that much better or worse. The layouts and size of rooms may look and be arranged differently. Also, Unit 3 has Beverly Cleary, which is still a dorm, but a different style, setup, etc. and not as tall.

If you’re really interested in how they look, look at pictures they provide online or visit all the dorms during Cal Day (if you’re coming) and check them out firsthand.

Units’ bathrooms/toilets are stalls with doors, but they’re really tall - I’d estimate them to be at least a couple inches over six feet. I thought the “public bathroom” feel was kind of weird when I first moved in too, but you soon get used to it.

Re: single-gender floors - while I don’t claim to have surveyed all of Berkeley (or come close), I have never heard of a girl who wanted such a floor to be denied it, only the opposite (people who requested co-ed but got all-girls). This year the 7th floors were the all-girls floors so one was guaranteed a nice view; not sure if the floor # stays constant every year.

@Agneisse: In my previous experience of hearing about people who were are on all-girls floors, they were all on a 6th floor with a female RA. While it’s different than what you said, seems like they’re both on higher levels, so I guess that’s one good thing about it.

On private time in toilets: In the Units: there’s totally private toilets on the ground floor of each of the units. There’s also some located in the Academic Services Center in the middle of the unit 1 complex. If you’re in Foothill, at Hillside, there’s some really good private ones in the recreation room area (also has a kitchen!).

Mini-suites have not completely private toilets, but once you learn the schedules of your suite-mates, you have a good idea when the toilet is yours!

Thank you for this thread.
