Berkeley or Emory

Hi guys..
I was accepted by Emory and Berkeley, however I have no idea which one should i choose.
I intend to major in biology (possibly premed)
I'm an international student.. so the location doesn't really matter to me.

My father really wants me to go to Berkeley.. but I'm not sure if it fits me.

Berkeley! Location, location, location.

Emory has excellent premed and sciences. And “location location location” goes for Emory too. They don’t call It hotlanta for nothing.

Did you say you’re from outside of the US? If I get that right, then by all means go to Berkeley. Berkeley is a top 5 university in the world. Emory? maybe top 100, but not top 30 by any means. This should be easy.

are you going to grad school or undergrad? if grad school Berkeley, no competition there. But if undergrad, definitely Emory. with a 7:1 student to faculty ratio, that’s tell you something about how much Emory cares about the students. At Berkeley, the classes will be much larger and taught mostly by grad students, whereas at Emory the classes are actually taught by professors and they are very accessible. Berkeley is an excellent school with great reputation, but in terms of undergrad quality and value it cannot compete with Emory.

^don’t you think thats a lit bit over the top? But I agree with chocolatenutz, you’ll get more personal attention at emory than berkeley for undergrad, and berkeley’s tuition is going to steadily increase year by year, so its not as big a difference of money as it normally would be. Berkeley has lots of grade deflation, so its hard to get really good undergrad grades which is necessary for med school. Go to Emory man. As an international this may be hard and rather expensive, but maybe you should visit one or both of them.

Berkeley is definitely not in the top 5 universities in the world…MAYBE if you’re just ranking public ones. US News even ranks Emory higher than Berkeley.

[National University Rankings | Top National Universities | US News Best Colleges](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/spp+50)

Either way, rank is not always the best way to choose your college.

I was wondering if it is hard for freshman to select classes in Berkeley… because i probabaly can’t attend the CALSO events (international student :frowning: )

Whatever you choose to do, keep in mind that some of the people putting in their two cents don’t even attend Berkeley, so please take their rumor-fueling arguments with a grain of salt (I.e. theradtomato).

FYI- Berkeley IS one of the top 5 universities in the world. Anyway, I don’t know anything about Emory. Selecting classes should be easy remotely as so many of the early classes are the required basics. I graduated from Cal and still live in the Bay Area. It is a fantastic university, great location and wonderful resources for students and graduates. Dozens of my closest friends were classmates and we are still quite involved in Cal activities, like football, etc. They have all become very successful in their chosen fields and they all look back fondly on their experience. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Go Bears.

Note that you do not have to major in biology to do pre-med. You can take the pre-med courses with any major.

The only thing Berkeley has over Emory is the world ranking, which comes from strong grad school programs. But since the OP is going to undergrad, he/she will benefit so much more at Emory. Emory is ranked 18th Endowment per student, vs UCB not even on the list, granted Berkeley is a huge public school with limited endowment. Berkeley simply cannot offer the same kind of attention Emory can. I don’t want to bash too much on Berkeley afterall, I was going to go there if I didn’t pick Emory
