I am having a very hard time deciding between UCB and UCSB, and between the Media Studies and Communication majors at the schools respectively. I love the comm at UCSB and the campus environment, I am worried about being pre comm and the having 4 lower divisions before I declare comm.
Berkeley has media studies and I don’t think it’s as well recognized or as strong as Comm at UCSB.
Has anyone experienced these programs have ny advice on how to choose between them? Anyone have a hard time deciding between the two? the major differences? How it could affect job search and grad school in the future? Anything helps thanks!!!
Have you visited either or both?
Yeah I’d go with a visit cuz IV and Berkeley are very, very different places
Hi there. First, congrats on your acceptances! That is so exciting! I currently go to Berkeley and I’d be happy to give my own personal experience as a student here if you are interested.
But to answer your question… Academically, I’ve noticed a sort of hierarchy of majors at Cal. If I can speak candidly, the Media Studies major here is joked about because it isn’t as difficult as, say, EECS. If you look at our meme page, it reinforces that. So just know that that is the general culture here. Personally, I think it’s a cool major and that you should go for it anyways if it is what you want to study! I think Cal has a lot to offer, especially with Pixar’s headquarters nearby in Emeryville for some cool internship opportunities.
I loved Media Studies at Berkeley. However either UC will give you good career prospects. I suggest you pick the campus that you relate to best. UCSB and Berkeley are as different as day and night. You might think it makes no difference but it could impact your enjoyment if you lean one way and choose the opposite.
I know I’m late on this thread but I’m having the same dilemma. UCLA Rejected me for Comm :’) so I’m choosing between UCB and UCSB…help
Yeah definitely go with the school you like best. Both great but so different. I can’t speak for UCSB but I know it really takes a certain type of person to enjoy Berkeley. So that’s really what it comes down to.
