Berkeley or UCLA

I am really debating both of these colleges. These are my top two, but I cant decide which one I really want to go for without a doubt. I am planning on majoring in Chemistry or Bio. Plus after college I would like to be accepted to a good med school. Which college would be best?

Since it is only application time you should apply to both. It is just one application and you only need pay 2 fees. Both of these will be fine, one is not better than the other for your purpose, except that Berkeley has a separate school of chemistry if you are interested in the strength of that program, but you can expect a lot of competition from students as good or better than you are at both of those schools…

better yet rice university

med schools won’t care where you go. they’ll care that you earned a high GPA.

???
as opposed to a bad med school. ;)

all US MD schools are excellent. You don’t have to worry about that.

Are you instate for Cal or UCLA? If not, what is your home state?

If you are not instate, don’t go to either UC for premed.

I am from Colorado. So I am not instate. Why should I not go to either because of that? These two colleges ate my top 2 and being accepted to them would mean so much.

Each will cost you $55K/year. No FA. None. Zip. So can your family give you that much money plus transportation? If not, you won’t be able to go there because you can only borrow $5500 the first year and $27K for four years.

Medical school is going to cost you a lot of money. Since that is your goal, and since med schools don’t care where you go to school, save all your money for med school unless your family is going to pay for u/g and med school. You can major in chem or bio almost anywhere in the country, including CO, for less money than it will cost you at a UC.

Your scores and your finances need to be tippy top to make it at either of these schools. You wont get a penny of California taxpayer money to fund your education here. So you need to pay full fees as an OOS. That will run you between $50K to $60K per year or $240,000 for 4 years.

It is a bad idea to attend a UC as an OOS premed. There is no benefit at all. There are too many high stats premeds at UCs. The state of Calif has way tooooooooo many premeds all fighting for the limited number of A’s.

UCs have poor premed advising. They don’t do Committee Letters. There isn’t one good reason to attend a UC as an OOS premed. It’s a big negative. You won’t likely get into a UC med school, that is for sure.

What are your parents saying? Are they saying that they’ll pay fifty thousand per year for a UC as a premed? If so, that is a waste of money. They’d be better off putting that money towards med school costs.

The UCs will not do a better job preparing you for med school or the MCAT.

What are your stats?
How much will your family pay?
