I'm a prospective, OOS engineering major that wants to look to one of these schools as a reach. Am I better off assuming my chances are better at UCLA, or am I better off applying to Berkeley and taking my chances? I don't have any major issues with either of the schools, but if you think one school would be preferable for some non-academic reason, feel free to tell me.

Well, since you are filling out the application anyway, can't you just pay $60 more and apply to both?

But in general, I think the Berkeley engineering department is a bit stronger, holds a bit more value/prestige, and is a little harder to get into. I think engineering at both schools is tough (in terms of academic work), to be honest. You could also consider the schools themselves: which environment do you like more? Southern California or Northern California? Los Angeles or San Francisco? If it's possible, visiting the schools also help.

It certainly comes down to fit--it doesn't hurt to apply to both, but really you should visit each campus, because both have a lot to offer and different atmospheres.

I'd be inclined to suggest visiting both. I think it really helps with the decision process.

I agree with UCLAri.

I wish I had the time and/or money. If you think it comes down to fit, then I think I'll consider applying to both and visiting if I happen to get accepted--that's what I plan to do with my final choices anyway come April. Thank you.
