is it worth the money to go to berkeley??

So you've been accepted to Marshall with a full ride?

And Berkeley's given you nothing?

Unless you have some burning preference to be in Berkeley vs. USC, I would say USC hands down.

I do think you can get in-state after a year, so the $23,000 figure will change.

I would still visit both if you can, but you'd have to really want Berkeley to make up for the difference in cost.

Remember: Haas which is a better ranked b-school is only a 2-year undergrad program and you have to be admitted. Too big of a risk. And Marshall is great.

i'm actually from maryland, so its out of state for berk. i visited usc and i loved it, but berk has better business school. and ur rite, there is a big risk of not getting into the bus program my junior year at berk

It seems silly to pay so much to go to a public school when you can go to a top tier private school for almost nothing. Marshall and Haas are very comparable in academic quality and job placement, so the $100k is certainly not worth it.

Also, being from the east-coast also, I would hope for some geographic diversity in my college. Less than 10% of Berkeley students are out-of-state, while about 50% of USC students are from outside CA.

Whoosh I know it's a very tough decision.... Cheap school vs Expensive but very prestigious school. I know what you're thinking.... Yes, the gap between Berkeley and usc is so huge that some might think you'd be crazy to turn down Berkeley. Besides, Haas is one of the world-class business schools and its graduates are so well respected around the world. I think I saw an article from somewhere touting Haas undergrad is smarter than some MBA's. In particular, if you aspire to get into business relationships with East Asian countries like China, HK, Japan, Korea, your Berkeley degree will be of great asset to you long down the road

1) Is Berkeley education 100K better than usc's? Probably not.
2) Is Berkeley's name on your diploma worth 100K in the long haul? Maybe.

I live in Maryland too - Bethesda Maryland. Is there any way that you can somehow establish the California residency within a year or two? Berkeley is such a great school to let go of like that?.. :(

I believe you can. But for the OP, I think the question has a clear answer: USC. And I am a big Berkeley-o-phile.

If you loved USC, OP, you would be crazy to turn down their full ride. If you love it that much, the way you can equalize the name value of the degrees is go to work straight out of Marshall in LA. Do good work and then move or then go to an MBA program or whatever. Very quickly what you do in life after school becomes much more important than what school you went to.

Don't make the wrong choice. Go to USC. I am a total Berkeley fan, and I am telling you go to USC. Think of the worst case scenario too: what if Haas doesn't admit you? You'd be in a school that was your second choice big time wondering why you were spending a lot of your parents' money.

thanks everyone!! i think i'm going w/ usc :D

well berkely is a very prestigiuos school so it would be worth it.
