I am applying as a transfer student for Fall 2012. I am hoping to have all of my prerequisites done by next Spring semester. My questions is in regards to the Math prerequisite, I am taking a College Level Algebra class (the only math needed for my associates degree at my college) but I'm not sure if it satisfied the Political Science prerequisites for math. If anyone has been accepted or is attending Berkeley as a Political Science can let me know what Math is required I would appreciate it! Also, will I need to take any more math classes for the major?
Thanks!

This website will tell you which pre-requisite classes you have to complete to transfer as a Political Science Major:

[Welcome to ASSIST](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>http://www.assist.org/)

It looks like Political Science doesn’t have any math pre-requisite classes that you have to take at cc.

Keep in mind that you will definitely need to take a math class higher than “College Level Algebra.” General Ed transfer plans (IGETC, etc) require a university level math class and the one you’re taking probably isn’t transferrable. Most people choose to take Statistics because it is the easiest.

I’m applying as an out of state transfer so assist doesn’t have information on my college. Would I need to take Statistics prior to transferring, or is that a class I can take once accepted?

Out of state makes it a bit more complicated. You should see a counselor about your transfer curriculum, or contact UC Berkeley directly.

Anyway, it doesn’t make sense to be able to transfer to UC Berkeley without having completed a university-level math class. considering all in-state transfer students must complete a transferrable math class PRIOR to transfer, i’d be willing to bet that out of state students must also do the same. I personally would not feel “safe” if I wanted to transfer to UC Berkeley and but did not complete a university-level math class.

So yes, looking at the required transfer curricula for in-state transfer students, in my opinion it is very likely that you must complete Statistics (or Precalculus, or Calculus or Linear Algebra, but I recommend Stats b/c it’s the easiest) prior to transfer.

again, if you want a definite answer, see a counselor or contact UC Berkeley about what classes you need to take as an out-of-state transfer.

Take stats. It’s the easiest, it satisfies the math requirement (on the IGETC, probably for out-of-staters too) and it’s the most relevant to poli sci.

A college level Algebra course meets the IGETC requirements for transfer. (You need 1 college level math course to transfer). For a Political Science major - Elementary Statistics with Probability would have been a better choice. It prepares you for PS3 Introduction to Empirical Analysis and Quantitative Methods. PS3 MUST be taken at Berkeley. It must also be taken before/during your junior year to be eligible for the Honors program. Here is the catch: With California money drying up … Berkeley has laid off professors … has 700 class sizes … is taking in more students … and CUTTING back on classes. Math PS3 was offered every semester and summers (unless you’re a math whiz avoid the summer class - PS3 is a grind). Now PS3 is offered one semester a year, so make sure you take PS3 as quickly as you can. Also, use RateMyProfessor to avoid the bad apples. Stoker is the best. She’s also approachable. Good Luck!

I copied directly from the UCB political science department, and it looked like you were not required to take any math for the major. However, like the above post said, you need a transferable math to satisfy the GE requirement.

Lower Division Requirements and Prerequisites for the Political Science Major

Two introductory courses from the following: Political Science 1, 2, 4, 5
Political Science 3
One history course (from a pre-approved list)

There is a required math course for the Political Science major:
PS3 = Introduction to Empirical Analysis and Quantitative Methods.
This class must be taken at Berkeley.

There is a required math course for the Political Science major:
PS3 = Introduction to Empirical Analysis and Quantitative Methods.
This class must be taken at Berkeley. PS 1 2 4 5 are offered at CCs and comparable classes in other states i.e. “Intro to US Gov” or “Intro to Comparative Politics” etc.

Make certain you take 2 PS classes in CC (or out-of-state tranferrable).

When you arrive at orientation you will need your CC official transcript - in hand - to prove you have taken at least 2 of the PS classes. This allows you to declare your major. You fill out the paperwork - and its checked - then you are cleared to sit at a computer and wait for the signal for all who have been cleared to - log in - and sign up for TWO poli-sci classes -which you learn are rapidly filling or are already filled. (You will be allowed to sign up for your other classes about a month or so later). While you are waiting for the signal to log in … you will hear people saying, “I’ve only taken 1 poli-sci class at CC.” Oh, sorry! You can’t declare the poli-sci major until you take a second PS class at Berkeley. So the declared are cleared to sign up for two PS classes.

At the signal - all declared (40 or 50?) will log in (except for a few non-computer savvy who will be calling out for help) then desperately try to enroll in rapidly filling PS classes. (Make certain you have several PS classes pre-selected in case your first choices are filled.) You manage to enroll in 2 classes … you sit back and sigh in relief … but around you students will be frantically calling out, “I can’t get into any class! Every class is full!” – The answer? "You will need to pick up Poli-Sci classes in the summer. Now, since the Major requires 8 PS upper division classes (plus the history) everything looks cool for the transfer student: 2 Poli-Sci each (4) semester = 8. HOWEVER, since the lower division PS3 (the math requirement) must be taken at Berkeley - ALL transfer students will be short 1 upper division Poli-Sci class. This must be taken in the summer.

Since the PS3 is causing such a bottle-neck students were saying PS3 should be offered at CCs. So far that hasn’t happened.

FYI: Orientation group will be all Poli-Sci., about 60 per group. There are about 12 groups = about 700 PS Majors per class year. (You might want to aim for the earliest orientation date…since classes will fill with each orientation group.)

Hey, you’ll have the time of your life at orientation - which is required - and you only have to pay about $240 to attend. (Don’t worry. Your parents get a 50% each discount if they want to attend). And yes, you can declare at the office later when you qualify.

I know this is a bit old but I thought it better then starting a whole new thread. Say that you are accepted as, for example, a Fall 13 admit, can you take PS 3 in the summer 13. Prior to that academic year or do you have to wait?
