Hey everyone, just posting regarding a nifty tip regarding summer school. Okay so Berkeley Summer Sessions have many benefits:

In my opinion, back when I was applying, this was a major draw for me. I'm not saying this should be a reason to go for Summer Sessions, but it helped to quell my anxiety.

1) If you register for summer session, you're given login info allowing you to create a cal login ID and passphrase. With an ID and passphrase, you're able to register for summer sessions. Here's the good part: You can also find out if you have been admitted to Cal a little bit earlier.

How?

Exactly a week before I was admitted, I logged onto myberkeleyapp and checked my financial aid status/awards page. Here you can see whether you're being given financial aid, living on or off campus, any scholarship award info etc....but you're not supposed to be able to see that until you're admitted.

With Summer Sessions, already having a login ID and passphrase, you're able to access it and view it a week early. That is, if you have a statement/page showing you how much money you'll be spending for Cal supplies/residential/tuition a week in advance, you're in.

I actually had a theory about this before I tried it, and it did prove true since I had the cal ID and passphrase. It's a backdoor way to finding out if you're in or not.

This was also corroborated by many other students on CC last year.

I wish you all the best over the next 2 months! :D Good luck!

Oh, and Cal is awesome! GO BEARS!

Awesome Emil! I was planning on attending summer anyway.

Question: How do we register before getting admitted? I looked up their Transfer Edge program, and it says to SIR first.

You’re welcome, guys!

@ Boston: Tbh, I’m not familiar with the Transfer Edge Program. I have a feeling that’s something in collaboration with summer sessions. I’m talking specifically about the summer sessions themselves, and you -can- register for summer sessions now, but you have to register as a “Visiting Student”.

Since you haven’t been admitted yet, you’re not a student. That said, you have to register as a visitor. Your login ID and passphrase will remain with you though, so make it something memorable. Anyway, even if registered as a visiting student for the timebeing, it won’t affect anything. When you are admitted, you can just switch from visiting status to student status, and you’ll get the refund (whatever it is; it’s been too long) as well.

Essentially, if you’re already interested in summer sessions, this is a perfect opportunity to take advantage of something extra. Apply as a visiting student, access Bearfacts.berkeley.edu, and then check your financial/awards status. It was awesome knowing I was in a week in advance.

All the best, guys!

right on, so paying 1600 bucks for a summer session class and I know a week earlier if I am accepted to Cal or not. Hurray!

Do you actually have to pay for the class in order to have an account?

I just tried registering and it forced me to add and pay for the class. I also don’t see any options for just “logging in.”

Thanks for the tip! I do concurrent enrollment at Cal, so I already have a CalNet ID - do you think I could find out if I’m in even earlier than a week in advance, or do they just post that info on Bearfacts exactly a week before transfer decisions come out?

@ altschool: Just check up on it over the next couple months. For me it came up on April 23rd, but yours may come up earlier.

@ nero: This is specifically for the students that are already interested in doing summer school. I wrote above, “Essentially, if you’re already interested in summer sessions, this is a perfect opportunity to take advantage of something extra.” Read.

@ goingmeta: Good question. I think you do have to pay for the class, but as long as you cancel it fairly early on (the dates are online) you can get a full refund. I know this because I was initially registered for 2 summer classes last year, but I only ended up taking 1.

As for logging in, you do that on Berfacts.berkeley.edu

Once there, click “Students/Student Resources”, then click “Students”, and then type in your Calnet ID and passphrase.

yeah, you pay 1600 bucks for cal and in the end cal might not accept you. great advice

@ nero: I’m amused by your sarcasm. Anyway, you must have ignored what I said regarding refunds for summer sessions. You can get a full refund by withdrawing from a class before it begins. Also, say Cal doesn’t accept you, it’s still possible to take summer sessions here if you’re genuinely interested in the class and apply it as unit credit to whatever other UC you choose to go to.

I’ll repeat, in the alternative, wherein you don’t want to take a class at a school that rejected you, just drop it for a full refund.

yeah great 100 bucks cancellation fee just to know one week earlier if one got accepted or declined. I do not know… let’s say you live in san diego and got accpeted to UCSD but declined at cal, you would have to move up here to go to class and then go back to UCSD. I assume that a lot of people still live with their parents on this board (just a guess), which means you would have to pay for rent and food etc. of course that would not matter if you are scrooge mcduck.
still to know one week earlier. but it’s cool right?

Ah, I didn’t see a visiting student option. I really appreciate you bringing this to our attention! I’m seriously looking into this now.

Thanks!

shut up nero, if you dont like it, dont do it. Same for any goddamn thing in life. I, for one, am glad emil decided to share.

nero… seriously. what’s wrong? like redoplease said, if you don’t like it, don’t do it. it’s that simple.

yeah I already went ahead and registered for summer sessions. \o/

I wish I could “like” comments here; I would like nero’s latest one lol.

Anyway guys, this was for those already considering summer school at UCB. As nero said though, I think there may be a $100 intro fee. Definitely check into that to see if that is refundable. I know the class units are, but I can’t remember if the intro fee is. Best of luck, guys!

nero speaks the truth. Your idea is ■■■■■■■■. Only some nerd-ass gunner would even think of doing this…

It has nothing to with “think[ing]” about doing anything.

If you were already going to take a summer class at Berkeley, this is an added benefit.

Thanks for sharing emils.

I just logged into BearFacts, and a majority of the sub-tabs are not working within Financial Aid and CARS tabs. However, I was able to access my “Missing Documents/Information”; when I clicked it, it showed that I had one form missing - the College Enrollment Verification form. It said that I needed to complete this form, because I reported on my FAFSA that I have a family member in college. I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but I am very excited! Why else would they be asking for this form…?!
