(Berkeley vs Carnegie vs UCLA vs GATech) + (Pros and Cons of UCB) - From India

Hey Guys,

I still can't believe I got into Berkeley!

It was really on the top of my list. I got rejected from all the 4 ivies but still the joy of being admitted to UCB is more than the rejection regrets!

I have heard a lot about UCB and the fact that it is VERY hard to get into (especially for a guy like me) plus it has a great engineering program.

I have also got into the following:-

1) UCLA
2) Carnegie Mellon
3) UCSD
4) Georgia Tech
5) UIUC
6) Purdue

Have Been reject by Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell, Upenn, USC, UTAutin, USC etc.

Have been Waitlisted at Washington University St Louis and Duke.

Wanted to know which would you choose and why?
Please feel free to say anything and to the minutest details

I will be visiting 2-4 schools out of these this month.

BTW i'm from New Delhi and an undergraduate Mechanical Engg Applicant!

Thanks Guys

If the money is the same, i.e., no one else is offering your a scholarship, Cal is the no-brainer for an international engineering major. Cal-Eng is ranked #2/3 depending on where you want to count Stanfurd; MIT is #1. Cal has more international prestige than any other college on your list. Prestige is HUGE is in the international arena. Cal has an international student pop that is 2-3 times that of UCLA. Berkeley and the Bay Area are extremely welcoming to internationals. Done.

Hey thanks for the reply. I have not applied for aid so i guess its still berkeley! what about duke?

I would go to UCB over Duke for ME any day. Berkeley’s prestige and ME deparment is one of the best in the nation. Additionally, Cal has a fairly large international community. Cal is extremely large and can be impersonal when compared to other universities/colleges, so do take that into consideration. However, in my opinion, the strength of the ME department greatly outweighs the concern about UCB being impersonal. Plus, you can always go to your GSI’s office hours to clarify anything.

Thanks i have the same thoughts.
