Berkeley vs UCLA

id pick CAL, but i wouldnt be as happy living in berkeley as i would be living in socal!! ive been in the bay area my whole life. berkeley doesnt really do it for me but for the school id have to do it.

Haha yeah I can say the same, ive been in So cal all my life, i really want change so thats why id love to go to berkeley. Also i have a few friends already attending that I am looking forward to possibly live with if i get in

I've lived in Berkeley for two years now, genuinely dislike the bay area in comparison with SoCal (from San Clemente, couple minutes south of Laguna =P). The school is amazing though.

uc berkeley and ucla are both decent schools and berkeley may even be better, but i'd choose school that are close and that's ucla for me.

i have question: if u are tap certified, does that mean ur chances to ucla is higher than to berkeley? is so, how much substantially?

generally, from all the things i read and perhaps even some bull craps, uc berkeley is easier to get into then ucla (for freshmen) and that for bay area transfers even some 2.0's get into to berkeley. anyway i am off the subject, so i will me tais.

nguyen, if northern california offers opporutnity for growth, it this the reason why the SETI is building extra-terrestrial intelligence radio signal detectors there?

dhl, i have read many posts by u, but i don't really particularly remember u being snobbish as some of the above posts are claiming. do u really think u are that accomplished as these people are asserting u figure urself to be? what is ur stats?

dhl- both are great schools. Berkeley is slightly more prestigious. If that's the only thing that matters to you and you plan to live in another state, then I'd say go to Cal as the gap between the two school’s academic reputation likely increases as you go out of state. Otherwise, I'd choose UCLA. I know people at both schools and the people at UCLA are much happier. The social life is far better at UCLA. Berkeley is not in the safest area around while UCLA's location is unbelievable. There is so much to do in Westwood and everything is very close; the beach, shopping, concerts, nightlife, etc. Cal's football team is a little better, but UCLA has the #1 ranked team in the country in basketball. The girls are much, much better looking at UCLA ;)

if you guys are tired of dhl's threads then dont both reading them. so chill out ilovecalifornia.

What is behind the impression that Berkeley's social scene is inferior to UCLA's? I can't keep track of how many posts I've read--both before tranferring to Cal and after--that hold that to be true. Also, I'm sort of confused by the suggestion that the area around the Berkeley campus is "dangerous." For the potential transfers, here are a few things to consider.

1) I've been at Cal for a semester and have frequently travelled to parties all around during the later hours of the night by myself and on foot. So far, the only people who have harrassed me are the lovely members of the UCPD. Why? During Welcome Week, they apparently have an MIP quota that they have to meet. So, they basically pull over anyone that looks like they're a college student in the hop of issuing a citation. Not exactly the most dangerous situation. It's a little annoying for the first couple weeks but it's better than being tasered for asking for a badge number, I guess.

2) If you manage to introduce yourself to a few people and/or are assigned to a room with a current Cal student, your social life--at least according to my experience--will be fairly awesome. Within the first week of moving to Cal, I had made about sixteen new friends and attended several house parties. Thursday nights and game nights are pretty wild in Berkeley. (Parties at CZ and Cloyne are fairly nice.)

As a bonus, most of the kids here take their studies seriously. This means your friends will likely help you foster a good balance between work and play. For example, my roommate--an EECS and Nuclear Engineering joint major--and I party pretty frequently and hard ... and we both are A students. (We also travel to San Francisco to go to bars, the symphony, and other points of interest.)

3) The girls at Berkeley really aren't that bad looking. There are a few people who take body modification a few steps too far and a few obese people. Other than that, the girls range from fairly cute to insanely gorgeous. Oddly, the nicer looking girls seem to be fonder of alcohol than the unattractive girls are. Make of that what you will.

College life really is what you make of it. If you go into Berkeley--or nay other school--thinking it is bound to suck on a social level, then that preconception will probably prove to be true. However, if you're willing to meet a few people and are civil to them, then your chances of finding something to do on Thursdays and the weekends are pretty good.

Does "Berkeley Vision" really exist?

I've actually never heard the term "Berkeley vision" used before. So, I don't know. Perhpas you could inform me?

By being present on the Berkeley campus, over time the less attractive girls just slowly become more attractive and that is when you acquire "Berkeley Version." Apparently there is another worse form in the UC system called "Triton Vision" for UCSD kids. I hear my friends from the UCs joke about this all the time

Um, no, that doesn't seem to be a problem. The unattractive girls still seem fairly unnattractive to all first year admits I know and I can still tell the difference. Besides, between the gay population, the use of alcohol, the fact that girls nationwide slightly outnumber guys at school, and the fact that it's much, much easier for a girl to get into most parties here than it is for a guy, you really don't have to settle for the unattractive girls. Just go up to a looker, offer to buy her a drink, have something interesting to say and enjoy your golden status.

"By being present on the Berkeley campus, over time the less attractive girls just slowly become more attractive and that is when you acquire "Berkeley Version."

Yes... when you are exposed to the same girls for a long time, you lower down your expectations, and therefore will look "better" to you :D

I have yet to see any indication of this despite my time spent out of the state and abroad. Despite the popular CC.com myth that nobody outside of California knows their head from a hole in the ground, UCLA maintains a good reputation with pretty much anyone with half an education.

It's also called "berkeley goggles."

Dhl3, I'm in the same boat as you. Personally, I'd pick Berkeley over LA in a heartbeat because I love economics and Cal is a better school for that area. Just by looking at the rankings, Berkeley's econ research department consistently lands higher than UCLA's, in both undergrad and graduate studies. This isn't to say UCLA's econ department sucks-- it's actually very good and really close to being on par with Berkeley's.

I guess how you should decide is why you're majoring in Econ/BusEcon. If it's for the business aspect of BusEcon, then go for LA. I've looked at some of the courses they offer under that major and they are very business-oriented, and you will also be taking economics theory courses to give context. I don't think Berkeley's econ major provides any classes like that.

As for being able to get good jobs, I'm sure either will do you equally well. What's more important, I think, is which area and which major you will be more satisfied and do better with. Because what really matters is how well you performed cumulatively, and employers like to see good grades. :)

why is the stereotype of berkeley girls being ugly sooo freaking important for you guys??

i see it disgusted somewhere or another like every 2 months..

and they aren't even ugly!!

if you mean ugly..bc u all look for blondes with big boobs then thats your narrow taste, not a problem with berkeley's girls

theres a lot of pretty indians, hispanics, middle easterners, etc etc

uclari

berkeley is more on the map than ucla outside of california, let alone internationally.

i swear in some countries it seems like berkeley is like their harvard.

it just depends where you are...new england>>>ivys are extra important

california>>>>UCs are extra important

internationally>>>>berkeley, mit, harvard....people usually dont even know what ivy is...

and ya this is all based on my obversations

Newsflash: Dhl3 is not a "superior" applicant. :D He's just asking which school is better.

Which I 100% Agree.

Thnx everyone for the insight, but to tell you the truth, I dun really care for the girls :P I already have a girlfriend, and one is enough maintenance to take away great portion of my time haha.

anyway. Yeah I definitely agree that in International level, Berkeley is viewed as some Goldy Ivy-level college. I agree if they are talking about graduate school, but undergrad, I just can't admit that they are on par with Harvard or Yale.

Anyway, as for Bandit Girl, yes I like economics, but at the same time I'd like some business aspect in it. I've also seen the curriculum for BizEcon at UCLA, and half the courses were accounting basically. And Accounting/Finance is one area of field that I'd like to approach.

Well I guess it all comes down to where I'd like to live and get the job after the graduation :P
