Does anyone have any information on the Film Scoring program at Berklee? I was recently accepted here and I am thinking about attending. I am thinking about double majoring in this and Composition along with taking a minor in Video Game Scoring. If anyone has been here, I would love to know about your perspective of Berklee.
PM’ing you
My son started Berklee this fall, and wants to major in Composition and Film-Scoring. As far as I understand, for the film-scoring major, a student needs to get a good grade (I forget the exact grade at the moment) in an introductory film-scoring class before being permitted to declare that as a major–I don’t believe that’s true of most other majors there. He’s taking the intro class this coming semester.
Others would need to give you more info on the scoring-for-video-games pursuit, or you might try calling someone in the department for specifics.
Good luck, and congratulations on your acceptance!
My daughter is at BoCo studying classical comp and chose the school largely because of the Berklee merger and access to their film scoring classes since that was what she thought she ultimately wanted to study. Three years later she has found a huge interest in musical theatre writing, conducting, directing as well as composing, scoring and even enjoying her instrument playing in a Berklee ensemble. Her college experience couldn’t be better. She has access to zillions of instrumentalists willing and WANTING to play her compositions with ample opportunities to have it performed. With divisions in dance and theatre comp students can also write for dance concerts and work with musical theatre students in a variety of ways. Also, the proximity to other schools has given her chances to work with their students. She has scored films for Emerson students and the outreach has been fantastic! Composers need to cast a wide net and really take the time in college to find their musical voice and experience as much as possible to help them launch a career in music. My daughter was fortunate to have some very good options for college. It was a tough decision but ABSOLUTELY the best place for her! If you have any other questions feel free to PM me : )
Some can launch after undergrad but others need grad school, so keep that in mind. USC has a top film scoring grad program but requires their undergrad students to first get a strong foundation in composition. That said, Berklee offers so much for those interested in this work.
