That probably means he was pushed to the regular action pool and may have to wait until march 31st until he receives a decision.

What’s really frustrating is that when he was told his application was still in review, he was also told that a decision would be issued on feb. 11. That day came and went with no email or phone call or letter. And now, to make matters worse, they can’t be bothered to return a phone call or respond to an email. I’m just stunned by the lack of sensitivity.

It’s possible your student forgot to check the “early action” box on the application. Just because you apply early doesn’t put you in the early action bucket. You have to specifically apply for early action. If you did, they made a mistake and you should insist on a decision. Call admissions, email the professor your student autioned with, call the dean if you have to. I know two other students who got their early action acceptances on Jan. 31. The rest will not know until March 31, because they are still doing regional auditions and will not finish out the freshmen class until they hear everyone.

I will definitely go now and double check his application! Not sure why they would have given us the Feb. 11 date if he wasn’t in that early pool but you never know!

Ok, double checked and it’s definitely for early admission so I"ll keep on pestering until I get hold of someone who can help!

I remember that something similar happened to a friend of my son’s a couple of years ago. He had applied early, and they did this same kind of non-response thing. Eventually, he got through to someone, but kept getting different answers as to when he would hear a firm accept or reject. Then he found out that he’d been moved to the regular pool (in other words, not outright rejected). I remember that it was incredibly frustrating for this boy too, as it seemed he was getting some sort of run-around.

I agree that it would be better to just get an answer, one way or the other. I hope your son gets some resolution soon.

so there have been a lot of acceptances and even more people who are still awaiting notification/auditioning etc. but what is everyones thoughts, especially parents, on berkee? i’m starting to have some doubts, i have never seen any other school with so many mixed reviews. I can’t tell how much of it is whiny students who couldn’t last and are griping, people who only have experience from friends or other biased things but the fact that there are so many aspects of it that have been under attack, most prominently the cost (obviously), facult, the students themselves and the overall success of getting a degree/job. I’m just not sure what to think anymore, and although I don’t want things like this to totally influence me, and my personal experience from visiting trumps all, I know I don’t want to risk everything in going to a ridiculously expensive school and leaving my family in squalor. Anyways I want input from other prospective students and parents on their view and as to WHY so many people set themselves on a “berklee or bust” outlook.

18karat, I have definitely seen mixed reviews on Berklee even before my daughter decided to go there. The facts are that Berklee is not for everyone. You have to be self-motivated and talented, and even then it’s a very challenging school. Berklee also seems to favor creative musicians … they don’t want to create a bunch of cover bands, but they do rely on jazz standards and classics to build on the education basics. If you are going there to have a backup BA degree that would lead to law school or med school, then it is the wrong school for you. Many students from Berklee go on to grad school; many others graduate and follow their intended career paths (film scoring, education, performance, etc.). Some join a band or start working on a film score, and don’t graduate (although Berklee lets you go back later once you were a student there). The most talented alumni of Berklee we do hear about, the most recent being Esperanza Spalding, graduated in 2005 or 6 and just received Grammy for Best New Artist over Justin Bieber and others. If you look at the musicians accepted to the Thelonius Monk institute the majority came out of Berklee. Berklee goes through great pains to audition the best around the world, and the best at Berklee compete with the best anywhere. Are there students at Berklee that slip through cracks or are disappointed with their experience? Apparently. Are there students or parents that are disappointed with their experience at Berklee? Yes, but did they have the correct expectations going in? Did they realize that only the top students get into the top ensembles? Did they realize that Berklee wouldn’t have the same perks as a large university (no health center, no central campus green, no fancy fitness building).

In the end, you have to look at what you want to do with music and how hard you are willing to work. Music at Berklee is not just about music theory and ear training, although those are must-have building blocks, but it is also about pouring all your energy into developing skills and confidence to be able to succeed. If you want to focus on performance, you will have intense training and private lessons through 8 semesters. You will be evaluated each semester to give you feedback on whether or not you are progressing appropriately. If you want to focus on music education, then you will get practical experience in the classroom as well as 4 semesters of add’l training on your principle instrument. If you are a composor or a film scorer, you will have complex and challenging labs, as well as access to internships. You will not graduate from Berklee without a skill, but not all majors will make money like the big names; that is just a reality.

Should you go into debt to go to Berklee (or any school)? No; if you didn’t already have the funds to go to Berklee or if you didn’t receive enough financial aid and scholarships, then you shouldn’t go. If you were strong enough to be an obvious star (Eperanza) then you would have received scholarship money, so if you’re not that, you should assume in your financial analysis that you’ll get a job that matches your major and talent (30K - 80K salary per year?).

The facts for you will play out over the next month or so. Keep us posted and PM any of us Berklee parents if you have additional questions.

Thanks for the detailed response, I really appreciate it. Being accepted has been bittersweet because I was not offered any scholarship money, which is pretty crucial to my ability to go there. And I felt discouraged because I (thought) I nailed my audition, but even if i did i realize there are a million other players out there who did better. so i’m happy i’m in. Music is of course the only thing I want to do and i’ve worked my butt for all of my auditions. I have nothing against the curriculum, actually it’s my favorite out of all of the schools i’ve applied to because it’s so diverse, while retaining jazz roots. And yes I’m well aware of esperanza, seeing that I live in portland shes a hometown favorite here actually i’ll be attending a free clinic with her next week. Anyways I’m just questioning a lot of things but I won’t know for sure what can happen until I receive word from the rest of my schools. Maybe i’ve always put berklee into a too good to be true way, but it has been the one school i’ve always wanted to go to.

Well, I’m cheering for you that it works out, 18karat. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

I did FINALLY get an email from my sons admissions advisor saying that he’d been waiting for the Board of Admissions to let him know when to expect a decision. Now he’s saying it will be “sometime this weekend”. This will be the third date they’ve given us so we’re not holding our breath :-(

Sure enough, weekend came and went, no email from Berklee. Ridiculous.

Hello, I am a guitar player from Argentina.
I had my Berklee audition on January 2011 applying for summer semester, and yesterday I found out that I got in!!!
I am very happy, but in my case going to Berklee depends on earning a scholarship.
I received the admission email on March 1st at 12:05 am. Does anybody know for how long should I expect to receive the scholarship email? Almost 24 hs had passed by and nothing.
Will I receive an email in both cases? (either if I earn a scholarship or not)

I would be very grateful if someone could help me, this really means a lot to me.

THANK YOU!

hello and welcome! congrats on your acceptance, i was recently accepted as well I play jazz too. I got an email about 24 hours saying I did not receive any scholarships, they will notify you about any decision that comes in whether you get anything or not. good luck!

jazzguitargirl,

Were you admitted to a degree program that happens to start in the summer or to a summer program that would not result in a degree? We would like to add your acceptance to the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1045522-master-list-music-school-acceptances-fall-2011-a-15.html if it is indeed a degree program. Don’t pay any attention to the Fall 2011 part of the name. It does not really matter that you would be starting a little sooner.

Thanks and congratulations either way.

Thank you very much!!!
I was accepted to a degree program that will start on Summer, I will study Performance, or maybe a dual major in Performance and Professional Music.
I am waiting for the scholarship decision, hoping that I receive it as soon as possible!

Thank you again, all the best!

I got the scholarship!!!

Yay for you, Jazzguitargiril! Congratulations on the scholarship. My D just started at Berklee this past January and is loving every second. She is voice principal and hoping to add piano as her 2nd instrument after this semester. She looks like she will be there for summer too, taking classes and working. PM me if I can help answer anything.

looks like i’ll (hopefully) see you there in september jazz guitar girl as for me it depends on financial aid but we might be able to swing it ;)

Can’t find how to notify Berklee S will NOT attend…
