Hi everyone, can someone let me know if Berklee deferes people. I auditioned Early Action, I have yet to hear I was just wondering what my options are, admitted or rejected but I was wondering if they deffered people. Thanks!

I have heard that they sometimes tell people that they were rejected for the class starting in the fall semester, but that they will be accepted if they are willing to wait a few months and start in the spring semester. I do not know if that was from an EA or RD application, however.

Not sure if this is helpful, but my son (jazz drumset) auditioned there yesterday and received an email today that said:

"The Board of Admissions is currently reviewing all completed early action applications for the fall 2010 term. Once the review is complete, you will receive one of four possible decisions issued via email and regular mail on January 31—accepted, accepted early enrollment (beginning studies in May), moved to regular action, or not admitted.

Accepted applicants will be asked to submit their $500 tuition deposit to confirm their seat. Applicants that have been moved into the regular action pool will receive their final decision on March 31. Similarly, if you applied early action but have not yet completed the application process your decision will be issued to you on March 31.

Berklee has received a record number of applications for the fall 2010 semester and the quality of these applications continues to rise. We feel fortunate to have such a wealth of talent from which to select our class.

Thank you once again for considering Berklee College of Music in your search for an enriching and rewarding journey toward the pursuit of a career in music."

It sounds to me (and I could be very wrong!) that if you are not admitted early action, you may still be considered for regular decision. For what it’s worth, they told my son that they had over 9500 applicants this year, I don’t know how many of these they will admit.
Good luck!

Silentcygnet–good luck to your son too!

Berklee seems to have an atypical set of admissions parameters.

From various sources, and I am not sure they are 100% accurate, it seems that they accepted 824 of 1490 transfer applications into last fall’s class, and 383 of those 824 matriculated. I found elsewhere that they accepted 1402 of 3159 non-transfer applicants for an acceptance rate of 44.4%, and that they had a yield of 50%.

They also report 4024 total undergrads and an 81% return rate between freshman and sophomore year.

They appear to have brought in 701 + 383 = 1084 new students last year. With losses of almost 20% in the first year alone, I would have expected the number of new students to be a bit higher even if losses in later years are much smaller. The difference could well be made up by the May and January admits, however, so it looks like the overall numbers are not terribly far off for the fall admission cycle.

Assuming that they had a combined 4649 applicants for fall admissions last year plus probably a much smaller number for admission at other times, a total of 9500 for the full year is a huge one-year increase. It could well force the acceptance rate down to the area of 25% - 30% and also throttle back the transfer acceptances.

Wow, those numbers are amazing! Thanks as always for the excellent info (not to mention math!), BassDad. Berklee has had a local reputation (don’t know if it is earned or not) that they accept lots of applicants, especially those willing to pay the full, rather steep tuition. Maybe being more selective will not be a bad thing? I don’t really know why they mentioned the numbers to my son, and as has been mentioned so many times, who knows what or why colleges do what they do sometimes!

Thank you also, SJTH, for your kind wishes. Berklee is not my son’s first choice (luckily, I think!), just because he finds it a bit “factory like” (his words, not mine…I am just along for the ride!). He has enjoyed his time at NEC much more and has found the instruction there to be wonderful. He has lost his heart (for the moment) to New York…he is still waiting to hear from the New School, and of course William Patterson (no prescreen, just a taped audition). I am trying to keep the attitude that no school is safe, and he will end up where he needs to be. Until then, auditions and practice will keep him busy. It is so comforting to hear everyone else’s experiences!

silentcygnet, perhaps you should call the New School, just in case something is lost or missing (which I know happens).

Silentcygnet, FYI I just reviewed last year’s threads, and my son (jazz drums) heard last year Jan. 20 from New School regarding his prescreen results and audition time. Hopefully you only have to hold on a little bit longer! New School was also his favorite audition.

last year the way it worked was if you apply EA you are either accepted, rejected or defered to RD, where you are either accepted for fall, rejected or offered spring admission and/or a waitlist for fall.

Thank you all again for your great advice and support…my son took matters into his own hands (I had to work a double shift today) and called the New School himself and he is in for an audition!!! There is much happiness in our house today.
Let the double session drumming begin
SJTH, where did your son end up for school and does he feel like it’s a good fit for him?

Silentcygnet–congrats to your son! My son found that the New School’s audition description online was EXACTLY the way their audition was run (one of the few,) so have your son pay attention to the guidelines/expectations: he will have a rhythm section, 2-3 adjudicators, and they run their auditions with near-military precisions. He should have copies of his music for the rhythm section.

My son is at Oberlin, (well, actually he’s home during Winter term and I can’t imagine a better fit for him. Feel free to PM me–I’m happy to talk about the jazz/drum world here or behind the scenes!

thanks so much everyone for all your information! i got that same email as well so im sorry for bothering you with information i was given the next day. those numbers scare me though because i really want to go their and the more selective the harder but we’ll see! thanks again!
