Berklee School Of Music

Is the Berklee School of Music a two year school or 4 year? Also, how hard is it to get in and what steps are needed to apply?

nycbound, a number of posters, myself included, have previously suggested you take these inquires to CC’s [Music Major - College Confidential](Music Major - College Confidential Forums). I asked one of the moderators to move one of your earlier threads http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1001837-music-auditions-please-help.html</a> there as well. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1002454-new-school-questions.html</a> addresses some of your questions about the Jazz and Contemporary program (although it does not address the program at Lang, which from a quick reading is a non-audition BA approach across a number of music disciplines) and suggests some potential sources to contact for direct experiences and insights.

I would strongly urge you spend some serious time in the music major forum, where you will find those with the experience and understanding of undergraduate music options. Based on the limited musical background you have provided, many of the schools on your list simply will not work for the path you have outlined. Juilliard, MSM, Brooklyn Conservatory are rooted in the western classical tradition, and for the most part are audition based admissions against some of the top talent worldwide. And yes, Juilliard’s admit rate is less than Harvard’s. Some aspects of NYU (admission is program specific, and is not a pick one from column A, one from column B approach as so appears is the option at Lang.) Berklee is a four year BM within a conservatory environment. It is an audition based admission which draws top contemporary, jazz and non-traditional applicants. There are 30 titled threads on Berklee in the music forum, as well as students and parents of those with audition experiences, acceptances, as well as some at the school.

Without knowing some additional detail of your training and musical background (as well as some idea of stats and test scores) throwing out the names of music programs that may or may not fit your needs is a fruitless exercise.

You seem lost in attempting to sort out options. You need to understand the basics, and the intense competition you will be up against. I strongly urge you to seek the advice and counsel of professional musicians or college level faculty to help you assess both your talent and potential, and pick the collective brain of the music forum.

I am not saying this to be harsh or discouraging, but you need to know how and where you may be competitive.

Thanks for the advice violadad. I just found out how to access the music major forums and am looking forward to all the information i can find there. Also, it may come off as harsh but it cant be any worse then I’ll hear from millions of critics on a day to day basis if I’m going to try to make it in the business. Thanks again!
