Hi I am struggling with whether i should study abroad in Berlin or Florence. Both of two sites offer the classes I want, but considering Italian is less popular than German , should I pick Germany? But I really like the atmosphere in Florence. Can some one give me some advice? Which language is easier?

thanks

I take it you’re planning on doing NYU’s study abroad program for a semester. If so, it’s not an immersion program. Most of the classes are in English and I believe you’d be with other NYU students in a dorm or something similar. So even though you’ll take a language course, it won’t be nearly enough to become very fluent. By the time you’re getting enough knowledge in it, you’ll be leaving. So don’t base it on which language is more popular.

Overall, seems most people say German is harder. That’s the language I had in high school and college, but have nothing to compare it to. Italian is closer to Spanish; it’s not as easy as Spanish, but knowing it probably makes learning other languages easier.

Have you read everything on the study abroad web site for those cities? There’s a pdf or something that’s done for each city. It gives more info. The impression I’d gotten, maybe it’s from searches and such for study abroad programs, is that Berlin is somewhat depressing.

I’d go with Florence, without a doubt. (I never ever again used my German, even in all my international business experience.)
