Besides Yale?

Right now I have a ton of safeties and am applying to about 15- 20 schools if I don't get into Yale. Everyone tells me it is way too much! How many schools are you guys applying to? Mine include UC'S, Boston U, NYU, WASLU, Amherst, HYPMS, Emory, etc. ..

Yeah, it’s too much. I’m reluctantly applying to 8. If the extra two weren’t free, it would only be 6.

10 total… umich is my only safety which i already got into so its only matches/reaches from there

I applied to 5 including yale. (Smith, Scripps, Union and Alabama)
UAlabama was my safety and I already got my acceptance and scholarship offer, so I didn’t see a need to do a bunch.

Just narrow down your safeties. If you know you can get in, just choose the one you like better over the others. There’s really no point in having so many.

Unless you absolutely need to see financial offers, like me. That’s why I’m applying to so many, but only 1 safety that I already got in.

If you have the stats for HYPMS, then you have way too many safeties on your list. 10 is a good number; 15-20 is overkill.

i gots 12 more loaded and ready to fire

That is a little overboard. Have you calculated the costs for all 15-20? Application fees alone could cost over 1000 dollars. Not to mention sending SAT/ACT scores to all of those schools at around 9-13 dollars per report. Do some research and lower your number, save your parents some money, they will need the extra dollars for the expensive tuition they will be paying.

I applied to 7 (three reaches, three matches, 1 safety).

I’m applying to 7 atm but am looking to bump a few off my list in favor of other colleges. I have 2 safeties, both state colleges I’m sure I can get into. The rest are reach/dream schools. The fee’s aren’t a big deal because I’m getting a waiver from my counselor for all of them (really need it.)

I kind of feel the same way as you, Collegestress16; if I don’t get into my dream school EA, I’ll probably panic and start sending out the applications. Just wanted to let you know that you aren’t the only person who’s worried and stressed. But I’ll try my best to keep my list to 10… maybe 12. I recently “committed” myself to an application (i.e. sent recommendations and transcripts), only to realize that the school might not be for me. I don’t want to make this mistake again, and you probably don’t either. My advice (from the perspective of a peer) is that you only apply to schools where you can seriously imagine yourself being happy. Of course, we could adapt to any school and be happy after we get an acceptance letter. But that isn’t really ideal, is it?

Okay, well, I’ll stop ranting now. Good night :)

I am applying to 8. If I don’t get into Yale early, after all of this damn work and WAITING, I will probably break into tears.

^ Journeeverte thanks for your insight! With so many schools to choose from I really wasn’t thinking about if I was going to be happy at the school. I felt like adding so many because the paranoia of not being accepted anywhere is kicking in. A lot of schools I don’t even know too much info about but I’ve heard they’re good schools like UCB and UCLA. I should really think about where I would be happy for the next 4 years of my life. But I feel like leaving my options wide open so come April 1st, then I can be picky and choose which school I want to attend. Thanks to all those who have replied, it seems like 8- 10 is a good number!

If you count each UC as 1 school, then I am applying to around 10. 20 is way too much (not to mention twice the cost.)

HYPS, MIT, Rice, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis. So 9 total. Rice paid the application fee. The UCs and Rice are my safeties. I’m only applying to Davis in case I need to stay in town and only applying to UCLA if there is some reason I need to be in SoCal. Berkeley and Rice are effectively my safety schools.

15 in total. That’s a lot compared even to other CCers… hmm…

Lets see here…Im applying to:

HYPS, Dartmouth, Brown, Rice, Emory, and Vandy (those last three on the off chance I get scholarships), Duke, and UNL (in case I need/want to stay near home)

I didn’t list them. Here they are, roughly in order of difficulty of getting in for me.

Stanford (QuestBridge)
Yale (QuestBridge)

Washington University in St. Louis (first choice)
University of Chicago
Rice University

George Washington University
Boston University

University of Pittsburgh (accepted with full tuition)

If I receive admission to the U of Chicago, then I will only be sending further applications to HYPS, U of Penn. If not, then, in addition, I will be sending applications to Rice, a couple liberal arts colleges, and a safety.

Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Brown, UPenn, UChicago, Northwestern, WUSTL, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, Tufts, Case Western, NYU, UConn

15 schools for me

If I get accepted into Yale then only 5, if not then 7 or 8.
