Best advice you can get? Take the ACT!

Having one last exam to complete before I become a 2nd semester senior, the one big thing I regret from junior/early senior year was not taking the ACT. The SAT, statistically, favors people who grow up with parents that speak english and are highly educated. So...all the legacy kids you are trying to beat out will do relatively well. The kids who go to elite private schools will do relatively well. If you do well on the SAT (well enough to get into the target/reach school of your choice), than good for you! If not, don't fret!

The ACT is a test designed to assess your skills in high school and not aptitude on vocab words. Statistically, those who do poorly on the SAT do better on the ACT. Even if you do well on the SAT, why would you not want to take different format standardized test to see how you fair. Given how important standardized tests are in college admissions, I really wished I had played the field a little more and diversified my chances.

Lastly, the ACT is scored out of 36. This is huge! While a lot of colleges have a 25-75th percentile spread of over 200 points (meaning 20 different scores can fit into it), most ACT percentile spreads are 4 or 5 scores. It's a lot less pressure on you...no one will ever be 30 points above you (hopefully). At my school, the kids who took the ACT and submitted that over the SAT loved it because for the most part, they were all 1 or 2 points away from a 33.

So....for those of you college focused CC kids, you truly should consider the ACT and, if the SAT is not working out for you, embrace it with open arms.

I’ll be taking them both, but I agree, I like the ACT A LOT more. My reading scores hover in the high 500s in SAT, but I get ~33 on ACT Reading. It’s really, really strange. Math - ~700-33. Writing ~700-31), Science, I’d rather not talk about that.

do ivies prefer sat or act?

Ivies have no prefernce actually; however, keep in mind that some schools require both the ACT and SAT subject tests if thats the road you decide to take

I too prefer the ACT and have had a better experience

I scored a 2100 on the SATs and a 34 on the ACTs

The SAT. I have provided substantial proof of this in other threads. Please view these threads for further discussion:

that’s what I thought. thanks mifune.

The ACT is easier, but I did worse on the ACT. I guess it was because I only spent like two weeks to prepare for the test…while I spent like the whole year on the SAT.
