Having one last exam to complete before I become a 2nd semester senior, the one big thing I regret from junior/early senior year was not taking the ACT. The SAT, statistically, favors people who grow up with parents that speak english and are highly educated. So...all the legacy kids you are trying to beat out will do relatively well. The kids who go to elite private schools will do relatively well. If you do well on the SAT (well enough to get into the target/reach school of your choice), than good for you! If not, don't fret!

The ACT is a test designed to assess your skills in high school and not aptitude on vocab words. Statistically, those who do poorly on the SAT do better on the ACT. Even if you do well on the SAT, why would you not want to take different format standardized test to see how you fair. Given how important standardized tests are in college admissions, I really wished I had played the field a little more and diversified my chances.

Lastly, the ACT is scored out of 36. This is huge! While a lot of colleges have a 25-75th percentile spread of over 200 points (meaning 20 different scores can fit into it), most ACT percentile spreads are 4 or 5 scores. It's a lot less pressure on you...no one will ever be 30 points above you (hopefully). At my school, the kids who took the ACT and submitted that over the SAT loved it because for the most part, they were all 1 or 2 points away from a 33.

So....for those of you college focused CC kids, you truly should consider the ACT and, if the SAT is not working out for you, embrace it with open arms.
