Best: Food, I guess. Some quirky cultural things.
Worst: shortness, rampant homophobia, people think I can’t speak English and thus talking very rudely about me right in front of my face!!!

But then again, people ALWAYS think I’m Asian, so I guess I’m not really subjected to the whole Mexican experience hahahaha. Most of my grade thought I was Asian until I won the Hispanic achievement award last year…

Best: Amazing Greek food. Wonderful family setting, I have so many relatives and my grandparents have always been present in my life. I have dark hair and olive skin that tans well in the summer! I have an Irish last name, so it always keeps people guessing. My people invented everything! ha ha.

Worst: I have oily skin (at least it’ll keep me from aging as fast, but it’s annoying now) and a lot of hair. I have to shave my legs every day. People have asked me if I worship Zeus. A lot of My Big Fat Greek Wedding references and stereotypes.

Hmmm…I’m the Heinz 57 of race. I’m everything from Czech, to native American, to Irish to who really knows what.

Pro: People find it hard to racially stereotype me. The worst racial stereotype I get is “You’re white”, and really how big of an insult is that?

Con: I don’t have anything to connect back to, and being middle class and white doesn’t make it easy to get financial aid anywhere, even though there are moments I really need it.

Haha. I’m white (Dutch + English) but adopted by Chinese parents. My perspective on this is kind of skewed.

Chinese (pros)
insanely interesting culture (…and food)
my family and I go to China every so often
I can speak Mandarin, which makes people stare
Chinese characters are fun to write
my haggling skills are amazing
because I lived in China for a bit, I got to explore other parts of Asia
I have cousins in Japan and the Philippines, and I think Malaysia, so in theory I always have a place to stay there

Chinese (cons)*
THE BOWL CUT.
people expect me to be a science/math whiz, when in reality I struggle with basic chemistry
hearing that AIYAAAAH when I do something wrong

*In a way, I’m lucky - my mom and dad are definitely more liberal than stereotypical Asian parents. They want me to do what makes me happy, and just recently my mom said: “No, don’t be doctor. You kill patient.”

White
nobody in school expects me to know everything.
I visited Japan once and someone asked if I wanted to model (sighs so hard being beautiful… )
I’m tall?
I got to know my birth parents and they took me all over western Europe, and I lived there for a bit
I have cousins in Germany, England and France so in theory I always have a place to stay there

best: strawberry blonde hair, grey eyes, and looking younger than I am
worst: sunburn, no college scholarships, and looking younger than I am

and I dunno, ElectricTech- my family could probably be in the running for the short-prize. You know- with the Irish and all. (Did someone say leprechauns?)

and Patsy Girl- yeah, the awkward compliments roll in, and I’m always baffled.
For instance: “You know, if this were the 18th century, you would be burned at the stake as the devil’s accomplice for having red hair.” -um… thank you.

Pros: Russians stick together, so I have both an English and a Russian group of friends. Some of the best literature is written in Russian. Russia has an amazing culture. I got to take advantage of an awesome education before I moved to the US.

Cons: People assume I’ve lived in the Soviet Union and have therefore suffered tremendously for it. Whenever Russia is discussed in history or English, everyone looks at me and expects me to explain the minute details of some obscure war or czar. Some people think I’m a KGB spy or a communist. I have trouble reconciling the two cultures sometimes. Also, Russian is a difficult language to learn, though I didn’t really experience that since it was my first.

Best - I’m a trilingual English, Spanish and French. I can pretty much communicate with those three languages anywhere. I’m good at the Social Sciences and English.

Pro: amazing food, maintain a fast metabolism, new years (yeahhhhh saebay!!), a lotta kids in my school are jealous (which is kinda weird :/, but it think its because of the korean pop culture kinda thing).

Cons: High expectations, colleges are kinda bored with it, racism, lack of representation, and so much more. ph and everyoen on this damn website is korean!

pros: Haha, I can also say, “I’m gypsy,” Moravian spice cookies, being able to swear in Dutch

cons: I never actually tan, I just get a funny shade of dark pink. Even then, I’m still so pale that people assume I don’t go outside. Also, when I tell people about my gypsy heritage, I somehow trick them into thinking that I can dance well :/

African-Canadian (parents from Ghana, born in Canada)
Of course, now that I’m in the states, I recognize the Canadian pros and cons way more than before.

Canadian Pros:
Being used to -3448 degrees weather, being able to go to a good school like Mcgill without going bankrupt, Tire sur la neige (fantastical maple syrup treat)

Canadian cons:
Being asked stupid questions like “Did you live in an igloo?”, everyone expecting you to speak french (luckily I went to a french immersion school so it didn’t bother me as much, but my brothers and sisters didn’t so this really annoyed them)

African Pros:
Getting to tell black jokes without being regarded as a horrible person =) (my school has next to no cultural diversity so these kinds of jokes come up a lot), being culturally exposed (if that makes any sense), knowing a language that barely anyone understands, good food (sometimes), no sunburn =).

African Cons:
Hair that is next to impossible to manage, being underestimated (although this can be a pro because it’s fun to prove people wrong), strict-ish parents. My parents aren’t that bad but they have their moments, especially when it comes to grades (“Is that an A- on your report card?!”)

I hope that all made sense. I’m pretty sleep deprived at the moment.
