I have a question for the students, alumnae, and parents:

What are the best and worst apsects of living and learning at BU?

Best:
You’re in the city at a school that does have a community vibe. BU’s all contained on a couple parallel streets, mostly Comm Ave. It may not be a traditional campus, but it becomes your campus. BU students dominate, and yet you still are right in the midst of Boston. I’m in love with the city and the school.

You can get really involved too. I’ve loved all the extracurricular stuff I do as well as my work study job. Just being a part of BU makes it feel a lot smaller to me. I love the community in each dorm. There’s housing for all different types of people here. Whatever you pick will often fit you just right. Then, you end up being proud of that too. It’s nice to form the whole roots deal.

Worst:
Being at a big school means a you are that small fish in a big pond. It means a lot of big introductory lectures. It’s easy to want to skip sometimes since you know you won’t be missed. For me, a lot of my classes posted slides online as well. There certainly were days when I had to push myself to go. It also makes things like relationships with profs, advising appointments, and more harder to personalize. You definitely need to put more effort into forming bonds. Coming from a normal sized high school, it’s been a bit hard for me to form those relationships.

Even for my worst though, I do generally like that BU is big. I still see people that I know EVERYWHERE I go. If it were smaller, I feel like I’d know the entire school by now. It’s exciting that there are so many more people to meet, opportunities to try out, and fresh experiences available.

Kenmore hobos. One time one of the hobos followed me for a bit. =/ So that counts as a worst I guess.

Best: Community Service Center

Worst: The ridiculous amount of red tape you come across when dealing with the Housing office and Student accounting services.

Kenmore hobos are also annoying as hell.

Thank you all for your answers!

What are the Kenmore hobos?

Homeless people that live in front of dunkin donuts/7-11/mcdonald’s/qdoba on Kenmore square and are super rude and annoying if you don’t give them spare change. Kenmore is always full of people so they wouldn’t dare attacking anyone, but they shout stuff at you and sometimes follow you a little.

Ah, that sounds a bit annoying. ;P

Ughhh. They’re awful. I fake cell phone calls or use my iPod pretty much every time I go into or out of Dunkins.

That happened to me when I was visiting Boston my junior year of high school. A Kenmore hobo roared at my friend who accidentally looked the hobo straight in the eye. He was pretty drunk though, lol.

Oh yeah, on Comm Ave there are lots of people trying to get you to buy something or donate or join stuff. Just keep walking. Fake a cell phone call or pretend you’re engaged in a text. It’s not worth stopping unless they’re giving free stuff.
