Current BU Students-- What do you love about it?

From current BU students-- what sets BU apart from all the other schools? Why did you choose it? What do you love about it that can’t be read from the website?

i love that while it is an urban campus, it really is its own campus. t access throughout connects you to the city and makes it easy to get to places like park street and govt center. i love the hockey games. i love having 6 or 7 dining halls on campus to choose from. i love how the school is so big that you can meet all different types of ppl and avoid the ppl you dont like while still keeping in touch with your friends. i love that most professors are extremely approachable and WANT to get to know their students. i love how even if your lecture class is 250 ppl, you can still make an effort to sit in the front section and ask questions and participate. you'll always find a BU student willing to help you out if u just ask. theres just so many different factors, i dont even know how to continue.

I'm halfway through my first day. The best part has to be that it is BOSTON university. I look out my window and see the Charles. I look out my dining hall and see the Citgo sign. Everyone is friendly and nice. So much stuff to do. Its awesome.

The CITGO sign looks great these days. They just replaced all the bulbs and the center triangle looks really 3D.

It's the beginning of September in the heart of one of the great cities in N. America. Fenway Park is jammed every home game with 37,000 and all the restaurants and streets around the area are hopping busy. There are other big schools but BU is - according to a new slogan being tested - "Boston's University."

I love:
-The city environment
-Great academic programs
-Endless clubs and activities
-BU HOCKEY!!!

I'm planning on applying early. Just love BU!! Can you tell me about the guest policy. I read in another thread, that it was very restrictive. I'm not sure what that means. Any thoughts?

Forget about that. There is a new policy and it's not very restrictive.

they now allow u to have guests of opp genders as long as you have your roommate's consent. if u live in a big dorm (warren, towers, west) then your guest can only stay for a period of 3 days at a time. if youre in a smaller dorm (bay state, south campus) then you can just bring people in and no one will care. of course, dont have someone live with you because if they find out then youll get in trouble for harboring a non-BU student. it just has to be ok with your roommates.

I love that it has so many strong programs in different fields. I feel like a lot of other schools have one or two strong programs, but here if you apply to a strong program, and change majors, your likely in another program just as strong. I feel like a lot of other schools aren't as well rounded.

I also love the faculty. They're so helpful, nice, entertaining and SMART.

Lergnom- I know you post a ton o helpful advice, but the guest policy is still very restrictive. While it is a huge improvement from previous years it is still fundamentally different from most schools.

I have been in a Calif. State school for 2 years, and upon arrival at BU heard about the reformed policy and how great it is.

These are my experiences with West Campus (Rich/Sleeper) and Warren Towers

Past 2AM NO VISITORS are allowed to sign into the residence halls. This has affected me almost every time I go to the residence halls after walking somebody home, leaving a party, or just hanging out later in the night...I am not allowed in past 2.

Any other time of the day I need to fill out paper work and submit my ID to a security person. This is often time consuming and repeatedly I have been told to fill out the paperwork again because it was in pencil, or blurry, or crossed out. Overall I have found the security guards like to abuse their power and treat students with no respect.

Also, if you live off campus, your card will not swipe at the Residence Halls. This means you can't eat at any of the Dining Halls unless someone who lives there fills out a form and signs you in. This is the biggest flaw. I pay the same amount for a meal plan, yet I am not granted access unless I am a guest of a resident.

For the off campus kids, the alarm system will always go off when you walk through the security gates, regardless of the fact that you are a legal guest.

Overall it is a time consuming, obnoxious process of getting into the dorms....IF you can get there before 2, because after 2, no sir.

My experience is with smaller dorms and they have no security guards and no enforcement of any policy.

I agree with you, btw, about the dining halls. If you pay for a plan, which not many people who live off campus do, then you should be able to get in whenever.

I don't have this problem anymore. I live off-campus but I have a BU dining plan. I can swipe into any dorm with a dining hall pretty much all day long. Once the dining hall is closed, I need someone to sign me in. Never really is much of a problem. I really like that overnight guests can now be signed in up until 2 AM. It used to be, if the person came after 8, they needed to be out by 2, or else they had to add a study extension. That was terrible. It is much better now.

Nothing, really.

Devilsrule- you can not swipe into Warren if you live off campus and want to eat at their dining hall

ok you can swipe in if youre on campus and/or have a meal plan. if you live off-campus and dont have a meal plan, you cant swipe in, which makes sense if u think about it. why would BU wanna let students into the dorms who wanted nothing to do with them?
