Best AP Statistics book?

I'm planning on self-studying for the AP statistics exam. I have never taken a statistics course (The only experience I've had is a class in Algebra II last year that covered it briefly). Does anyone have any recommendations for a book that will help me out, preferably one that's as comprehensive and detailed as possible?

I’m planning to take the AP Stat test soon too. I’ll be taking a course on it next semester though.

I would think that the Barron’s book is one of the better books. It is pretty difficult and comprehensive. It at least helped me get a 5 on the AP Calc BC test (though, I had a great teacher).

I’ve just looked at a few random pages in statistics books and all the symbols look so funky! I’m wondering if I’ll even do well self-studying…

I studied with a textbook, and I got a 4 on it.

Look up “The Practice of Statistics”

Hi. In my opinion, the best books are these:
Marty Sternstein AP Statistics (Barron’s Ap Statistics)
[Amazon.com: AP Statistics (Barron’s Ap Statistics) eBook: Marty Sternstein: Kindle Store](http://www.amazon.com/AP-Statistics-Barrons-Ap-ebook/dp/B00C4YYFZG/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386834657&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=AP+Statictics)

and Richard A. Johnson Statistics
[Statistics, Student Solutions Manual: Principles and Methods: Richard A. Johnson: 9780471718840: Amazon.com: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Statistics-Student-Solutions-Manual-Principles/dp/047171884X/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1386836834&sr=1-3&keywords=and+Richard+A.+Johnson+Statistics)

I’ve bought used books but get fresh knowledge :^)

For all these books that you guys are mentioning, what part should we study the most? In other words, what section would you say is most emphasized on the AP test?

Marty Sternrtein AP Statistics (Barron’s AP Statistics)
Diagnostic Examination
Summarizing Distribution
Comparing Distribution

Richard A. Johnson Statistics
Probability Distribution
Regression analysis

Ok. Thanks, I’m assuming that these are the subjects most emphasized on the AP test then?

The biggest portion of the test is inference. You need to have inference pretty well down because last year when I took the AP exam, at least half of the FRQs had at least one part involving inference. My teacher last year suggested Barron’s (it’s big and pretty boring, but they go over most of what you have to know) and the 500 practice MC from 5 steps to a 5 (didn’t use that so don’t know how good/bad it is).

However, summarizing/comparing distributions are definitely important as well. They’ll serve as your ‘foundation’ material so make sure to be very strong in this too. My teacher told us to CUSS-discuss Central tendency (mean median mode), Unusual points e.g. outliers, Shape (bimodal, unimodal, etc.), and Spread (std dev, range, etc.) The other topics AssignmentExpert listed are also important… Hope this helps and good luck! :)

I’m going to take the AP stat too. Can someone let me know what majors will need stat?

I’d guess econ, applied math, even some humanities like international studies. and of course business schools.
