Best bank for college students

So I currently need a bank to keep my money in. I'm working at the college I'm going to as a desk assistant to pay for the next semester. My sister uses M&T bank. Which bank is the best to open a student account at. I'm trying to get the highest interest rate (I know I wont get much) and a bank that has no minimum requirement in the bank account. Which banks are you guys using and why? I appreciate any input and suggestions.

I use Bank of America at school because:

1) it’s on campus
2) the other two banks I use don’t exist in a 100 mile radius of st louis (so I can’t deposit paychecks, and my employer doesn’t do direct deposit…). They’re actually fairly national banks too…

Since I have no idea where you’re going to school I’ll just say PNC Bank. They’re mainly on the Mid-Atlantic and such, but I love them. Very good bank to work with. Get their Virtual Wallet product; the money management tools are pretty nice and the savings account has something like a 1.1% interest rate (far better than anything I’ve seen). And that’s not 1.1% when you have over $10,000 in the account… that’s 1.1% at all balances up to $25,000 (at which point you’re better off with different savings account).

So if you have some branches near you, definitely consider them. My only real issue with them is that they don’t have branches on the West Coast or even in the Plains states.

I need a bank in maryland, so any good banks in the east coast? Or anyone from maryland know which bank is the best.

Well you’re especially in luck because I live in Maryland/DC (DC right now) and I go to UMD. I think a lot of UMD students use Capital One Bank (formerly Chevy Chase Bank) because they have a branch on campus as well as an ATM (or two, idk)… but living off-campus, I don’t have a need for that. And I just checked the PNC site; supposedly there’s an ATM on campus but I haven’t seen/looked for it.

Bank of America may be a poor choice for the OP, since you need to keep $300 in your savings account at all time to avoid paying the maintenance fee.

^Not with a student account.
There is no minimum needed for mine.

The interest sucks, yes. But the convenience of being on campus is worth it for me, since I’m essentially using the account as a drop box for my paychecks until I graduate.

Chase is good! Chase is pretty much everywhere, and free for students.

C H A S E B A N K!

Errthang’s free!

I just switched from TCF to Bank of America because TCF instituted a minimum balance. I really like BOA. There is no minimum balance for a student account. I have a checking account and a credit card through them. I don’t know what kind of regional banks you have in Maryland, though.

I love wachovia.

Best bank?

Your CREDIT UNION!

Wells Fargo.

It depends entirely on the school. Which school are you attending?

Ally Bank… it’s an internet bank with no physical branches and 1.24% APR on savings accounts with no minimum balance and no minimum amount to receive that APR. Only major downside is you can’t deposit cash. (You can mail in checks or do wire/ACH transfers.)

Also they’ll refund you back any ATM charges that you incur at the end of the month meaning you can use pretty much any ATM for free.

Recently switched to it from Bank of America. Screw BofA’s excessive fees for everything…
