Best big, well-ranked uni for out of state aid

I’m really interested in big research university-type places, but my family cannot pay the current going rate for practically any of these schools out of state. Any knowledge on what university will offer really great education and significant out of state need-based and/or merit aid? I’ve seen stuff about university of arizona having better rates of out of state aid than some. I know a lot of southern schools have great merit aid for high achieving students, but I am not interested in going to any SEC kinda places (ole miss, bama, etc). Any others?
Would prob qualify for some significant merit aid-- 1420 sat, 4.0 unweighted. Thanks for any suggestions!!

FSU OOS Waiver you would be a good candidate with 4.0 and 1420

University of New Mexico could be an option.

Was literally just looking at this-- honestly think I’m going to apply. I’m super into outdoorsy stuff and have always kind of been enamored with the Southwest. Thanks!

What about University of Utah honors? instate rates after Year 1 - becoming more popular with students from the Western States including
California.

Arkansas, Ms State, Ole Miss, South Carolina. Find the right school, not necessarily the cheapest.

Glad I could give you a good suggestion! Best of luck!

Also look at Arizona St.

UNM was cheaper than any of our in-states because of WUE. They also really reward academics. Same with NM State Univ.

UNM seems to be a better school than New Mexico St. Agree?

No, not really, and I’m saying this as someone who graduated from UNM, albeit back in the dark ages. The areas where UNM shines are engineering, because of relationships with two national labs, and the long-respected anthropology department.

Depends what @celiepk is looking for. Both schools have a lot to offer, are very diverse, and very affordable. Both offer many majors. However, the OP said they want a big research university - UNM is larger than NMSU and is a R1 university. I imagine that there are more opportunities in Albuquerque than Las Cruces.

Either of these is going to be much smaller than ASU or U of AZ, both of which are huge campuses. Also tremendous schools that can be great value for out of state.

Yes, big research uni is what I’m looking for-- I didn’t know asu and u of az are bigger than unm. I’ll look into those.

Did I miss what state you are from? Are there no in state big research universities?

I’m from Indiana. IU Bloomington is totally an option for me, and I am happy to go, but I really do want to explore my options for getting out of town. Without doxxing myself, I’ll just say that I live real close to IU. I wouldn’t say I have any sort of complex about it, but I do kind of want to get out of town. However, IU is amazing and cheap and I will definitely be going if significant aid at other schools doesn’t pan out.

Ohio State has great merit for oos students. They also have a competitive but lucrative scholarship involving diversity.

I second Utah. Very outdoorsy and in-state tuition after year 1 if you meet some simple requirements. I know people who have done it— very doable.

University of Arizona has a webpage that shows how much merit with specific gpa and sat, so that may be helpful for you.

West Virginia University also has automatic merit awards outlined on a web page. I was very surprised how generous the awards were.

Iowa State

Michigan State
