Best Boarding Schools

Rank -- Schmank --

From what I've observed, the following are the best boarding schools in New England:

1) Andover
2) Exeter
3) Choate
4) Hotchkiss
5) Deerfield
6) Northfield Mount Hermon (NMH)
7) Loomis Chaffee

Jonathan was going to day it when he saw it, so I thought I'd go ahead and add St. Paul's. Personally, I'd also add Groton, Milton, and perhaps Lawrenceville.

When I saw what? lol.

That list above my last post about the top boarding schools.

The top tier, Tier One, rankings of U.S. boarding schools based on college matriculations is: St. Paul's, Andover, Deerfield, Groton, Milton, Hotchkiss & The United World College of the American West. St. Paul's, Andover, Deerfield & Groton were really in a class above all others. UWC is clearly the best value. TIER TWO: (listed alphabetically) Cate, Choate, Cranbrook Schools, Lawrenceville, Middlesex, Phillips Exeter, St. Andrew's, St. Georges & Thacher. Somewhat unexpected was the fifthteenth place finish of Exeter out of the twenty rated and ranked U.S. boarding schools.

icy, where do you get that info? hotchkiss/groton/deerfield/milton over Exeter? ... pshht

Maybe they do have better college admissions percentage-wise, but I bet Exeter still gets about the same number into Ivies and whatever other colleges were used. They can only accept so many from each school.

And anyway, Exeter owns all of em, regardless.

"And anyway, Exeter owns all of em, regardless." - tommeister

truer words were never spoken

btw i'm friends with you now on Facebook :)

Deerfield's 2001 college placement, too old to use in my study, was the best of any single year. Exeter is a very fine school with the third largest endowment in the U.S. All of the schools that I rated and ranked are well into the top one (1%) percent re: college placement. Please don't be defensive as I did NOT use any opinion in my survey. Exeter was very cooperative and publishes their college matriculations for all to see on their website. I actually had to round up to tenths to be able to get Exeter into the top 15. Roxbury Latin, a small, all male Boston area day school which graduates about 48 per year finished first. I did not include the 5 or 6 outstanding New York City day schools, such as Collegiate and St. Ann's, as I was primarily interested in boarding schools to which all students regardless of residency can easily apply and, if accepted, attend. Roxbury Latin is, however, equal to St. Ann's-- which was the top rated school by the WSJ. Exeter is still the most famous U.S. boarding school, and it is in a spectacular New England location.

sure you didn't use opinion. Did you conduct this survey alone? And where do you go to school?

I am not young. I did not attend any of the schools in Tier One or Tier Two. Additionally, each school received the methodology and preliminary ratings during a verification and comment period. Not even one school objected to the methodology. Some requested private ratings and others requested to be ranked by tiers. I had to rank some private day schools, as they can be much more selective with a significantly higher yield in major metropolitan areas.

i see ... exeter is #1 no matter what

My study was based on facts and standards created by other organizations re: college placement. My opinion was not a factor. Your opinion is based on emotion and is valid to you and, thus, should be respected.

icy9ff8, you lost your credibility a long time ago.

ahahha really blairt, how did that happen?

his rankings have changed drastically in the past few days.. first it was

St. Paul's School 97 (max rating 100)

Phillips Academy 95

Deerfield Academy 94

Groton School 94

Milton Academy 93

The Hotchkiss School 92

The Lawrenceville School 91

Middlesex School 91

Choate Rosemary Hall 90

Phillips Exeter Academy 86

then, as a professional consultant, he didnt' have access to taft's matriculation data, despite "brag sheets"

so he asks child strangers for sources:
" Still need 2006 and/or 2007 Taft School college placement list. If you can help, PM me." <So the study wasn't even complete, but up for publication?

"Got it from frantzconsulting@yahoo.com. They still need 2006 and 2007 college matriculation info." -- so this is not him, he just gets secret, unpublished info from these consultants..

"Thank you for assisting our study." -- wait, but he changed his mind. It's "our" now.

Then, "I cannot comment further publicly as I hope to publish this study"...

but wait, here it is, the revised "study":

Then the rankings change:

"Tier One: St. Paul's, Andover, Deerfield, Groton, Milton & Hotchkiss & United World College Tier Two: (listed alphabetically) Cate, Choate, Cranbrook Schools, Lawrenceville, Middlesex, Phillips Exeter, St. Andrew's, St. Georges & Thacher."

And unknown 3d tier schools are introduced to this "top 15" list.

and, how convenient:

"Surprisingly, Exeter finished fifthteenth and barely made Tier Two."

Oh, wait, again:

"Exeter also was the only boarding school with a significant # of unhappy students."

And he dodges every question pertaining to his authority/identity/the validity of the study

C'mon guys, he has an agenda. I saw this on day one.

As long as he factors in Dunkel Index ratings, I think icy9ff8's ratings make some sense. Intuitively, perhaps not. But the Dunkel information is so painfully evident, I'm not going to cast stones. He even had to round up to tenths! Clearly this study has eschewed the WBTY Indices. So...chalk one up for Dunkel over WBTY! fun is fun must be eating humble pie right about now. LM(RE)O!

icyff98, please answer the questions.

icy, I'm pretty sure that Exeter has the second highest endownment, with somewhere over 900 million. Andover's in third, with 730 million, and the Kamehameha schools first with 6.5 billion (very cool schools, by the way, but really, they should have one on every island. Sorry, won't get into that now.) Correct me if I'm wrong; who, besides Kamehameha, is has a higher endownment than Exeter?
